I've felt the same way often. I'm retired and live on a very fixed budget. Our pastor has never said we're obliged to tithe. I think going to church and trying to be the best person you can be is good enough until the time when you can put something in the basket. God isnt going to give up on you because He understands your struggles. So do I. God bless you.

God does not expect one to tithe monetarily. Your tithe comes from the heart and through your worship. The old testament's version of tithing was done away with when the Hebrew law became invalid (The death on the cross). The New Testament mentions not a specific amount to give but a heartfelt contribution to the church. As it is open ended, many church clergy do not expect it, as it is a gift. The true tithe is the worship and reverence to God and the encouragment to other members of your congregation in their faith.

There is NO New Testament mandate to tithe. Tithing in the OT was only for farmers/herdsmen....those who grew grapes, wheat, barley and those who had herds/flocks. The tithe was only for those in and near Jerusalem. Can you imagine Jews living in Rome and bringing their fresh produce on a 4 week trip through the desert with no refrigeration?

Further, Jesus was a carpenter, Paul at tent-maker and most of the apostles were fishermen....none of them were required to tithe money from their livelihood. You give WHAT you can -- WHEN you can because there IS a biblical mandate to "owe no man".....

Who do you think blesses you with the money that pays those bills? We go to a job, but it is God who gives us the health to work. We are a thief if we don't give God what belongs to Him. I am a stay at home mom and we sacrifice alot for this to happen but the Lord blesses us to remain. God does not need my money. But I do because I love Him and I expect Him to open up the heavens and give me blessings that I can't contain, as He promises...and He does! Remember this, before a blessing leaves heaven....it must first leave earth ( our hands ). If we hold stuff loosely in our hands, it will remain. But if we clench it tight, we will lose it!

he does understand however there are stories of people giving what they have and being blessed after. even the Bible they talked about the women who put only a penny to tithes and they mocked her but Jesus said she put everything she owned into tithe.

I used to buy in to the whole 10% of the gross goes back into the offering plate for tithe. And then a professor of mine talked about how we're not under Old Testament law where they were to give 10%. Jesus repeatedly talked about giving, about the widow's mite, and he also talked about the young boy who gave his sack lunch and Jesus took just that small thing and made it so great. God loves a cheerful giver--He wouldn't have you give to Him begrudingly, that would defeat the purpose. Give what you can, when you can. Always pray about how much to give, because God promises to care and clothe us, He won't have you do without but He wants you to trust Him in your giving, knowing He will provide.

A good friend of mine was in the same situation. She has 2 kids, single mom, etc She had a little more one day and put $5 in, then suddenly she started getting money out of the blue.
It is said that the sacrifices we make are rewarded ten-fold.
She gives regularly now.

Would a man rob God? He owns everything you have, and allowed you to have it, yet you deny him his 10 percent. Ever ask yourself that might be why you're having some issues over money right now? We have to be a good steward over our finances, but just because you over spent does not mean you can cut him out of what belongs to him. No he does not have to understand, you do... he made the rules, we just follow them, he will forgive you for your mistake, just fix it.

God never sees a dime of your tithe - it simply goes to maintaining the lifestyle of the pastor and his family so they can have a certain status in the community. Take care of your family, treat others with respect and give to your favorite charities as you can - God understands.
