@ phlada64: Okay.

The Dark Ages set in after the fall of the Roman Empire left communities isolated (because the roads were too dangerous to travel), mostly poor (because trade dropped to almost nothing), and mostly ignorant (because poor people are too busy surviving to teach their kids to read and write). It also left a power vacuum which the Catholic Church was happy to fill. People accepted the Church's authority because they were fearful and ignorant and helpless.

I see religion working to make people fearful and ignorant and helpless, and keep them that way. I see it trying to subjugate women and brainwash children. I see it claiming political power, and I hear very few voices rising to gainsay it.

That suggests -- at least to me -- the beginning of a new dark age, this time not just for Europe but for the world.

I have a feeling that no one would know they were IN the dark ages, until they came out of them.

"The scientist being attacked could very well be an evironmentalist and liberal." I'm awaiting the arrival of "The Skeptical Environmentalist" in the mail, by Bjorn Lomborg. He is an environmentalist and claims that global warming is not happening. I'm interested to see why he thinks so. "It is unfair to label someone as something they are not just because they are trying to do honest research." This is exactly the case with a lot of the issues at present. I have been long-devoted to the thought that agents like Greenpeace were there to do good. I also until recently felt a certain warm feeling towards Green lobbyists, such as Ralph Nader (reason why we now have seatbelts), but then again putting pressure on people (scientists, government officials) that are trying to do their job (govern and/or mandate by logcial or scientific basis) to the best of their ability. I also believe that the number one reason why scientists get into the business of science is to help people, not for profits. "Science has been demoted to belief. Confusion is becoming more than rampant." I'm happy to see some others out there feel this way. It can be leveled on both sides (or more than two sides?). Each side has their working orders. "The real voice of intolerance comes from the nature nazi's. Their agenda is right in step with global socialism to punish the U.S. and other developed nations to put us on the same footing with third world countries." I am getting this overall feeling the more I read, though I would love to see why this person thinks this. I have reading and reading on this topic more and more - it was true, I saw the Gore movie a few years back and thought that settled it: Global Warming is happening. I had other things on my mind, as is with most of the public - this is why I think the media should do a better job at reporting or uncovering the truth. I actually think there should be some sort of off-hand newscrew that likes to de-bunk popular beliefs and so forth. These are the kinds of people that will keep the Dark Ages at bay.

You are probably in exactly the same ship as a large proportion of activities gamblers up and down the nation that are dropping way more than they ever win. You may have the casual gain that keeps you coming back for more, but most of the time your choices lose. And that prices you ever more cash! You don't need to predict a return to the Dark Ages. They are here now and have never left. They only change locations.

The "Dark Ages" never extended across the entire globe. They were focused on the Christian areas of Europe where the church demanded absolute faith and unquestioning belief in the "one true God."

There are stark parallels between Christian Europe of the "Dark Ages" and much of the Islamic world today. North Africa and the Middle East were once at the forefront of civilization and science. Now they have the practice of Sharia Law and terrorism.

We are far, far from another Dark Ages. We are on the cusp of enlightened times. There will be many changes in the coming years, some may seem frightening however these are like the pains of giving birth; great and then a time filled with joy as the birth of a new age arrives.

Interesting concept. How much do you know about the Dark Ages? To have another one, we would have to go back to a standard of living that has nothing to do with the way we're living today. Can you expound a bit on the question?

It's hard to keep people in the dark for long today. Bush has done a great job with Americans w/r/t the war on terror and the war in Iraq, but the rest of the world gets a bit more balanced view of things.

What are the odds that there was first Dark Age?
More people wallow in Dark Age conditions today than ever suffered under the actual "Dark Ages."
