I recently purchased a Ford Taurus and the dealer wants 175$ to reset the door code so I can use the keypad to unlock my car. There has to be a better way any suggestions?

The Owners manual gives no mention of how to reset the code it does direct me to the location of the factory code which should work but its not where is should be and i was unable to locate it

Un fortunately on this vehicle the Keyless entry code set at the factory is not located in or on the vehicle. You DO need to have a Ford service center get it for you.
If you bought it at a Ford Dealer, I would suggest talking to your salesperson.
(I ALWAYS provide MY customers with the codes to operate a feature that is standard equipment on the vehicle that they just bought! )
If you did not buy it from a Ford dealer, perhaps you could have somebody contact the original owner & see if they have a record of the code.
If all else fails, $ 175 sounds a little steep! Try calling a couple other Ford Service departments & see if one will hook you up for less.

Ethol is correct and it can't be reset short of changing the module it is in. On this model , unfortunately, I've never found the number on the module itself, and have always had to use a scan tool to retrive it.
The dealer is steep and must be talking of changing the module for $175 than just retreiving the code which most dealers do for a half hour fee (normally under $50)
Some will also do it if done if asked for with other work (such as a MIL light or say programming new PATS keys (which I recommend you do if you only have 1 or 2 keys for the car as it needs 2 keys to self program a new key (meaning not having to take it to a dealer and use a scan tool to program), and if you are in the habit of loosing keys, those programming fees add up real quick)

The code cannot be reset. The previous owner will always have access to your car, unless you change the module. Temporary codes can be set, but the factory code is not erasable. So what to do is your choice. I'd replace the module, so that no one else could get in my ride, without breaking something. Spend the money, and feel safe.

We had problems locating ours on my 2000 Ford Explorer. It wasn't where the manual said, so we called Ford factory costumer service (the number was in the manual). They gave us different places to check. The dealer is totally ripping you off (like you didn't know, right?).

I also have a Ford Taurus...mine is a SES....but you probally will have to let them set it for you...because there are so many sensors it can mess up if ya do it your self! My brother has a Dodge intrepid...it has been in & out of the garage..because of the door locks messing up the sensors! Hope I helped!

I have no clue. I would try looking it up in the users manual.
