I have a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle TDI (turbo diesel) in need of a new timing belt and tensioner. Parts and labor, how much should this maintenance cost me (at a repair shop -- not a VW dealership)?

i work for a VW dealer in California, beetles are cramped at the same time you do the timing belt you should also do the water pump because you dont have to repay for labor even at dealer rates with coolant, the belt and water pump this rarely works out at over 550 the tensioner is the single most expensive part not doing the timing belt at every 60k miles for a manual transmission and 40k miles for a automatic can lead to very expensive repairs, if the belt brakes or tensioner fails. i would recommend taking it to the dealer simply because they do this work every day and are familiar with the cam timing and injection pump timing

A pretty good friend of mine has an 02... and its not that great. It has 130k miles on it, the water pump and A/C have gone out, its had countless electrical issues that come and go with the dash and controls. The interior panels and pieces have issues holding together, and everything in that car, because its german, is really expensive to fix. Her water pump job cost nearly $2k. As far as mileage goes, dont be fooled. We drove the car from Bristol TN to Miami FL and we never got better than 26mpg, and averaged 24mpg. Personally, the best all around car I have ever owned was a 2000 chevy Impala. Not to mention my grand parents have an 02 Impala with 240k miles, still runs like new, my buddy used to have a 2000 impala and that car we absolutely beat the hell out of (jumped rail road track, locked up the parking brake at 80 to see if we could spin it around, jumped driveway approaches, etc) and never had any major problems with that car. His parents also have an 04 Impala, and it has been a great car for them as well. We all have gotten over 30mpg, both my grandparents and I got/get 32 on the hwy @ 75mph. So that is the car I would recommend.

If you get out for under $500 you should consider yourself lucky.
