Pain, generally. Take the dog to a vet. Although, I knew a dog that shivered and trembled when it was overly excited, but if this is a new and sudden development, I'm betting it's hurting. And badly. And I'm not a dramatic alarmist. This concerns me.

It sounds like your dog probably has an ear infection although there are other things it could be. Regardless he will need to see the vet to treat the problem there is nothing you can give at home to clear up an ear infection.

Well we need a little more info on this dog, like what kind
First thing that comes to mind is Ear MITES, Is there black ear wax in his ears? When you rub his her does it turn unto your hand to make you do it harder "like he iches"
Take him to the vet to find out for sure!
