Not only do Jack Russels need an EXTREME amount of exersize they also need something to do.

They're one of the smartest dogs alive. They need something that tests their intellegence. Look into "Flyball", agility, and "Earth Dog" competitions.

Boredom and not enough exersize lead to non-stop barking. Also, distructive behavior and fence jumping.

Teach her cute stuff. Teach her to clean the house. She can be trained to pick up toys and clothes and bring them to you, or put them away. Teach her to jump through hoops, jump rope, dance, and "sing" (bark) on command. Get "Dog Tricks for Dummies" it has lots of cute stuff to teach her, and in the back is a list of clubs and activities to join.

Teach him to run next to a bicycle. Go for long runs everyday. Plan on working up to an hour a day, at least. More is better. Tired dogs are managable dogs.

EDIT
"Supplements" won't help. Not against the energy of a JR. Nothing short of narcotics will dull the edginess of the little guys. In fact, at the clinic where I worked, I saw more than one JR over come the effects of very powerful drugs.

We keep ours calm with exercise, we are lucky because we live on a farm. We bought Badger as a house dog, but he has turned out to be the best little cattle dog that we have ever owned, he runs miles every day rounding up and moving cows, even when we don't need them moved!

If you are able to take him for long walks to get rid of some of his energy that would be great, and lot's of games in the backyard would also help, basically a busy Jack Russel is a happy Jack Russel.

We also bought him up from the start, the same we that we raised our Doberman, making sure he knows he is not the boss in the house. Simple things like he never goes through a door in front of a person, he always has to follow behind. He also never gets fed before we eat, the pack leaders, the people eat first, then the dogs.

This conditioning makes it easier for them to accept that barking is not on, and if we say NO then he stops straight away. If you can try keeping him in his place, then it may help.

Stopping barking depends on when he does it, if it's when you are home, then telling him off, and meaning it should get through, if it's when he is on hos own, then as a previous poster said, try one of the citronella collars that activate as soon as he barks.

Good luck.

I have a Jack Russell also. He too is overly hyper. We live in the country and he chases or attacks every varmit, deer, squirrel and even chases buzzards as the fly over. He barks day and night. He has a special bark for snakes and will attack any he sees and has been bitten only once. We have given up on his barking. How do you stop his brking? You don't. Not even the dog whisperer will soilve it for you. Let him bark, you will get use to it.

I love JRTs!

Walking or jogging for 3 hours/day (using a 4 foot leash) is a required exercise for JRTs. Invest in really comfortable running shoes ($100) to prevent callous/blisters on the foot. Bring some doggie treat along the way for some energy booster. Explore different streets/avenues.

Have a wide range of toys at home. We have two different kind of bones (regular white bone and this long femur bone). We also have plenty of different kinds of toys-- variety is the key. All can be bought at dog stores and kids store.

At home, we also play intense fetch for a good 10-20 minutes.

JRT= your personal gym trainer for the next 10 years!

Oh dear. Yes, shock collars really are bad news. They can't 'cure' hyperactivity, that's for sure! The JRT is a 'hyper' breed. They really need a job to do - Earthdog competitions are great for them, as is Agility, Flyball, and the competitions that the JRT Clubs have around the country. You can use Meetup.com as a good place to meet other JRT owners and ask them what they do to help their dogs burn off excess energy....why not take a class in clicker training? Mental stimulation works very well, too.
Good luck!

Unless you can find some way to magically change the breed of your dog, I'm afraid you'll just have to deal with it. Or find him someone who realizes what jacks are like before they take him.

first off all take him to the vet they will not laugh but I think its probably kennel cough. This happen to my dog years ago {in doggie heaven now} he had been in kennels for 2 weeks and when we collected him he could not bark for ages all he could do was make a very hoarse noise

there is a kind of supplement for dogs that is supposed to help calm them, you can get it at petsmart in the vitamin section. as for the shock collar...i had one for mine and it didn't even phase him. he may need more exercise, sometimes the barking is just a way to let out extra energy.
