I am not talking about super long distances or anything -- just riding for excercise/fun.

Thanks!

It does, actually.
You need comfort, first of all.Next is support and protection.Lightweight.Traction.
With these criteria, skateboarding shoes can be the best choice. These shoes are very comfortable, they offer ample ankle support (they have high and padded collars),they are not stiff but allow your foot to stay steady inside the shoe, they're lightweight (skateboarders use them to flick the board and do tricks),and they offer excellent traction because their soles are made of sticky rubber. This traction keeps your foot/shoe stable on the pedal so your feet don't slip off the pedals when you're riding. Also, your pedals must be platform pedals and not the ones that need cleated cycling shoes.

Shown are skateboarding-inspired mountainbiking shoes. You can see also the type of pedals they are used with. This is just a visual example and not my reference point for brand and price.

I only ride about 6-8 miles a day but need stiff soled shoes or my feet hurt afterward. I found some Avia cross trainers with very thick soles - especially the part under the ball of my foot. They are double the thickness of my walking shoes. My feet don't hurt anymore.

Shoes with stiffer soles are preferable. Tennis shoes vs. Flip Flops, I would go with the Tennis shoes everytime. If you start riding further, I would recommend looking at some cycle specific shoes to make it more comfortable. Recreation riding and tennis shoes are a good match.

Im assuming you find the right size shoe, I think that it's fine whatever you like.

Maybe one with stiffer soles are better to flexy ones, but other than that, whatever fits nice.

Cicling shoes have their soles stiff. Some are pretty stiff (you couldn't flex them with your hands). The reason is to apply better the force of the leg on the peddal.

But, if you're not doing 4 or more hour rides, just anything that feels confortable and is not slipper flexy.

Wear tennis or walking shoes. They are lightweight, but they will still protect your feet. Don't wear anything that leaves any part of your foot exposed (sandals, flip-flops, or any other open-toed shoe).
