Has anyone ever torn an intercostal muscle or oblique while sparring or in competition...maybe even a cartilage tear on the ribs? If so how long did it take to heal and how did you treat it? I have a nasty strain on my right side, and I'm guessing I strained a muscle in the area or tore an intercostal. I'm not in terrible pain as I was on the day the injury occurred, but I do feel that slight pain when taking a deep breath, coughting, or apply too much pressure...I read I should take about 2-4 weeks off and the injury will take about 6 weeks to heal...any tips are help determining what the injury actually is!

Yes I have had both broken ribs and an intercostal tear and they heal very slowly since this area does not get good blood circulation like some areas when they are injured. While the intercostal tear was not a bad one I had to baby my workouts for a few weeks and it gradually went away.

The broken rib injury took much longer-almost a year and it was still tender if you hit me on just the right spot sometimes after that year. I could not sleep on that side when it first happened and it hurt to cough or sneeze for a week or so.
Ice is good for helping to lessen the pain and inflammation of the injury while heat will promote better blood circulation so alternate between the two and that will help. One of the ways you can tell if it is a broken rib is to lift your arms above your head. The pain from a broken rib will be sharper and more pronounced than if it is just a cartilage tear and broken ribs are usually caused by some kind of event where there is impact while the cartilage tear can be caused just by overdoing something and does not have to involve impact.

You may have strained or possibly torn the ligaments of the knee. The knee has limited side to side movement. The leverage over the lower leg, and the control of the hip and ankle puts all the lateral force into the knee. Ice for sure, as well as staying off it. It is also a good idea to contact a doctor. It might not be that bad, but still hurt like crazy. My left elbow was hyper extended once and that hurt for ever. On the other hand, I did learn my lesson. I hope you will learn the same. Always, ALWAYS keep a bend in all your joints. Even though you train with friends, and there is no malicious intent, accidents can happen. Especially when you train with beginners. My teacher has always said that beginners are the most dangerous people in the room. Remember they don't yet have the control a more veteran partner would have. Good luck with everything, hope you heal quickly.

well if its torn then most back movements would be suicide (being that your external oblique wraps all the way around) but never the less if you can still move around a bit with minimal pain then it would be best to take some time off, because if it is only just pulled then trying to go on would just tear it and then your really gonna be on a break. i would just wait it out for a lil while.

2-4 weeks sounds like too long to take off training, go book in for a massage and warm up really well before training, defintely take some time off but no way near that long!
