The you that asks is that immaterial self-aware element we call "soul." We could say that a dog has a soul but whether or not a dog's soul is everlasting or not, is another question. The Bible teaches that man's conscious soul will forever reside somewhere; with God in heaven, or without God and outside of heaven. You know what the alternate place is called. Christ proved by His resurrection that he lived through death, and being God incarnate, He even preceded His own human life. But His resurrection was the promise that we too will rise, and "we" will be fully aware that it is we who are at that time receiving glorified bodies that will last forever as well.

Our life did not begin at birth, nor will it end at death. Prior to being born we lived as a spirit (sometimes called a soul) child of a Heavenly Father.
After we die, our spirit enters a world of spirits to continue learning and to await the resurrection where are spirit will be reunited with a perfected physical body, never to be separated again.

You have a soul (second-Mind, Will, Emotions) so that you (a spirit) can operate down here on the Earth.
In the Physical Realm.
Do you know how many calculations your Soul makes for you a Second, to be able to drive a Car?
When you wake up in the Morning, YOU know who you are (first mind--you, a spirit).
If you try to remember something, your Soul, hooked to your Brain (their partners, one afftects the other) might not be able to recall that information for you untill you wake up (get more oxygen into your brain) and drink some coffee (caffeine for stimulation).
Then, your soul and brain start to remember (recall actually) what YOU (a spirit) want to remember.
Wonderful, isn't it?
