I'd say, any puppy from the animal shelter/pound. The staff will probably match you up with the best puppy for you; many workers are very knowledgeable about the animals. Don't get an animal from a pet store or breeder; this supports the pet industry. Also, why do you want a puppy? Puppies require house training and extensive training. Adults already have been house trained and are probably good pets. If you want an adult, check free-to-a-good-home ads, http://www.petpromise.com, the shelter, or breed rescue groups. If you think an adult is for you, I advise you adopt a greyhound or pit bull; they are the two most abused breeds. Pit bulls are not as bad as people would want you to believe; they actually have better temperament than most American cocker spaniels!

Well, you can't judge a puppy on the breed. Every puppy is different.
but anyways...i'll answer your question.
This is MY opinion. I'm sure there are thousands of people who will disagree with me but in my expirence the best puppy I've came across was Basset Hound.
I own three of them and they are the BEST dogs any one could ask for.
First i will start out on their behavior. Many people acuse Bassets of being lazy and boring. But, that isnt true. In my life I have owned 4 and have had litters of puppies. Not one was like that. The reasoning is simply....they follow their owner. If you're a lazy laid back person they'll be a lazy laid back puppy/dog. If you're outgoing and adventerous, they will be too. We have never EVER seen or heard of a Basset attacking ANYONE. They are just a loveable dog. They are funny too might I add. They are always trying to get you to laugh. Thats there goal in life. Mine will roll on their backs sticking their feet up. It's so funny looking that you have to laugh. Theyre job is complete. My one Basset is the biggest goof ball. The things she does is unbelievable. I have another Basset whos ears are HUGE. I mean he's still young and all but I haven't seen a dog with bigger. When he walks they drag on the ground and when he runs he accidently steps on them and goes tumbling towards your feet. Then he looks up at you trying to smile. Its...remarkable really. =]
They are also gorgeous dogs. Theyre longs bodys and short legs are just too cute! Also there ears. Very long really.
They have droopy ears and a little too much skin.
Here is a picture of my one as a little puppy:

And here is a picture of my one girl who is absolutely gorgeous.:

I really hope I helped! Let me know what you decide on getting!

One that spent a lot of time with its littermates and mom at a young age. One that has a responsible and loving owner who provides good quality food, excercise, discipline, and affection. Thats what makes a good dog or puppy, regardless of the breed!

Basset hounds are great dogs, females are generally happier and sweeter than males. They like to be outside and really like to sleep. The two that I've had were very good and patient with kids. The only downside is that they shed a lot.

A puppy from a shelter that is in desperate need of a home. They make the best pets because you rescued them and they will spend the rest of their lives making it up to you.

The best dog I ever knew was a mutt who was largely St. Bernard. Very good around children. But his most important asset was that he was well trained and well loved.
And a well trained dog is a happy dog, with a happy master.

i wouldn't recommend shelter dogs, unless they were about a month. usually shelter dogs have abusive backgrounds in which they tend to be very defensive and sensitive. i adopted a puppy from a shelter and im not saying that it was a mistake, just a shame that she couldnt have a happier life, she was so fragile and shy because she was abused by her previous owners.
