I had my doberman's ears cropped at 12wks. The vet did not want to post the ears after initial surgery for fear of infection, so we wated approx. 2 wks for ears to heal and have stitches removed. I feel this had a negative impact on progress... its been nearly 3 months since the surgery and the ears still will not stand correctly. The pup will be 6 months on 20 June. Is this too late to expect the ears to stand correctly or is this avg.? I've had other owners tell me i may have to do a second crop... is this true?

The left ear has started to stand fairly decent with a firm base, but when he perks his ears it folds onto the top of his head. The right one still droops like a bat wing. Perking ears leaves this one half erect... firm base with top half bent straight down.

Hi, Your vet should have racked the ears right after the surgery. This is a shame. Did the vet not have a lot of experience before your dog? That is why I always say if someone is looking to crop to make sure the vet is highly recommended with lots of experience. I do think there is still a chance the dog's ears will perk up though. You may want to print this article out & show it to this vet & see what he has to say. I really don't think you can do a re-crop on your dog since he is 6 months old. http://www.dobermanclub.org/Buying_Puppy/ears.html Has the dog been in a rack at all ?Is he in one now?

I'm sorry to say that the vet was wrong. The ears should have been posted and a wire brace fited between the ears to let them heal correctly. A second crop will make the ears unbalanced, ie to short if not done by a pro. NEVER let a general vet crop the ears ( as you learned the hard way) ONLY go to a vet recommended by one of the doberman kennel associations or someone who has a LOT of experience with it. If it helps, I made that same mistake many years ago, thinking that my regular vet could do a good job. Boy was I wrong. Seek a pro and get his/her opinion before going further. Good luck

Your vet did not advise you in the right direction. Your dobe's ears should have been taped right after the surgery. This allows for the cartilage to harden properly. By leaving the ears down for 2 weeks the cartilage in the dogs ears hardened. I'm not sure if another cropping will do any good. It all depends on how long the ears are cut to. I highly recommend you see a different vet. One that has experience with ear cropping.

The ears still may stand be sure to keep taping then. Are they still floppy? or is there some strength in them? if they are standing for short periods of time then you can assume they will stand full time if you continue taping.

it sounds like your best bet is to find another vet for a second opinion on the ears, the ears should of been posted if you wanted them to look good, you should of went back for a fix, and too the cut on the ears could of been sloppy, here again don't be afraid to go see another vet about it, its your pet, next time insist on the posting
