As christians do you believe that Deuteronomy & Leviticus are relevant? Do they apply to your religion? Why / Why not

The case law lesson of a blasphemer being stoned to death, and other applications of the death penalty (Leviticus 24:10-23), including anyone having "a familiar ghost or spirit", a child insulting its parents (Leviticus 20), and a special case for prostitution (burning them alive) (Leviticus 21)

The killing of homosexuals (Leviticus 20:13)

Don't wear clothes made of more than one fabric (Leviticus 19:19)

Don't cut your hair nor shave. (Leviticus 19:27)

Any person who curseth his mother or father, must be killed. (Leviticus 20:9)

and the big one: Don't let cattle graze with other kinds of Cattle (Leviticus 19:19)

or

If anyone, even your own family suggests worshipping another God, kill them. (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)

If you find out a city worships a different god, destroy the city and kill all of it's inhabitants (Deuteronomy 13:12-15)

another inportant reason I ask:
If people use Leviticus 20:13 to show that god is against homos, because it says: "If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination".

Should you also equally be against haircuts? and eating pork?

Sorry, relevant is the wrong word. What I wass getting was "that these commandments are no longer valid"...like killing people.

2007-06-09 12:53:28 · update #2

But mostly.....is it a sin for me to shave?

All of the Bible is relevant. What you are trying to say is that homosexuality is not a sin, nor an abomination. Leviticus is relevant. Just as Genesis is relevant. You do not get to pick and choose.
The New Testament also speaks out against homosexuality, in women as well as men, in the book of Romans. I suppose that we should just consider that not relevant, too?
Read the first chapter of Romans, from verse 24 through 32. A sure sign that God abandons a society, and turns them over to a reprobate mind is that the people of that society become obsessed with immoral sexual pleasures and perversions that shame and degrade the body, such as homosexuality. Does this sound familiar? It should. There is an almost militant homosexual movement right here in the USA, as we speak. They demand that we give them special rights and priveleges simply because they are homosexual.

Sorry. Romans is relevant. Leviticus is relevant. It's all relevant.

Yes, they are relevant. I believe "irrelevant" would be the wrong word. The laws are not to be followed, and it's true that Christians should stop using the Old Testament, specifically Leviticus and Deuteronomy, to condemn homosexuality.

There are plenty of New Testament passages that can be used.

However, the Old Testament is still valid, at least to the extent of reference, and for history. Not only that, but it contains many prophecies, many of which are pertaining to Christianity (e.g. the birth of Christ).

I think many Christians take an ala carte' mentality with the OT. If they already hate homosexuals, they use the OT to justify their bigotry. But, if they have a pension for wearing cheap, 50/50 sweaters (as many Christians do), they claim the mixed fiber law doesn't apply anymore.

Leviticus is by far my favorite book in the Bible ;)

You forgot to mention Romans chapter 1 vs 27 -32.
It also says the same things.
These were letters or epistles written to various peoples in ancient days, they were written to address concerns church leaders had over what was going on in those area at that time. Yes they can be very useful to us today in learning who God is, that we may gain a love for God. Also they could help us understand the serious nature of some of our sins, thus helping us to repent before it's to late.

the Law is but a shadow of Jesus, Jesus is the fulfillment of Gods word. we are not bound to legalism or the mosaic laws since Jesus completed them in full.

if you are a student of the Bible you will know that even in the stern nature of consequence for breaking a law it is obediance for the good of the people.

furthermore you will also know that God desires Mercy not Justice above all, this is the whole ministry of Jesus.

by the way Jesus lived Torah not new testiment theology, the difference between Jesus & the religous leaders of that day was Jesus lived by the Spirit & man lived by the letter of rules, of which , where created in large part by men.

The Sabbath was made for man not man for the Sabbath. We are Christians and interpret the OT by the NT. Also, Jews do not go by the written Torah alone but as mitigated, refined and interpreted by the Oral Torah, especially as shown in the Talmud.

Old Testament. Different time different place different people. Jesus came to do away with the "old law". He came so that we wouldn't have to deal with that nonsense (old law) anymore. Read the New Testament. By the way, I am proud of how much you have read in the bible. It sounds like you know your stuff. Keep up the good work!

First, I will begin out with a commendation to Rene for the reply. It sums up the situation all men and women face whilst fitting a Christian. While we did and had practices that we are living with earlier than, afterwards, we must reject and refuse to become a member of again in the ones identical practices. And as our love and capabilities of God grows, it offers us the force to maintain within the direction that has God's backing. Now, seem at Paul's phrases at Corinthians. (one million Corinthians 6:nine, 10) nine? What! Do YOU no longer recognize that unrighteous individuals won't inherit God’s kingdom? Do no longer be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor guys saved for unnatural functions, nor guys who lie with guys, 10?nor thieves, nor grasping individuals, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom. Rene makes the factor that whilst people who hate homosexuality cite this, they'll usually forget about the opposite practices, and will even be sharers in them. How many church guys cheat on their taxes, better halves, and abuse alcohol? Now learn the next phrases of Paul. (one million Corinthians 6:eleven) eleven? And but that's what a few of YOU had been. But YOU had been washed blank, however YOU had been sanctified, however YOU had been declared righteous within the title of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God. Notice the commencing word "And but that's what a few of YOU had been." A individual can blank up their lives and Paul indicates that's what the Christians of the first Century did. This could incorporate homosexuality. So, it isn't such a lot that Jesus was once tolerant, however that he knew the potential of men and women to make selections and to difference their direction in lifestyles. That is why he was once despatched by means of God to start with, in order that people who lives had been broken by means of the corruption of sin, would had each wish and support of their resolution to difference their lives to be in concord with God. Sadly you're proper approximately the abuse of the scriptures for political agendas, however is not that the way it has been for among the life of the so-known as Christian church buildings? Today it's the hassle of homosexuality, virtually two centuries in the past, the clergy joined in at the bandwagon of "Manifest Destiny" that God had "selected" the brand new American country to dominate and subjugate the continent, even supposing it intended struggle towards the local peoples and another country that had curiosity on this continent.

Yes, the law was written for a reason. 17"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. Matthew 5:17
An Eye for an Eye
38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.'[g] 39But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. 41If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Matthew 5 38-42
