How much should a St.Bernard eat each day ? I was told two meals a day, because if they eat to much they can bloat. Is this true ?

For the one who answered he's on his last leg, how would you like to live out the rest of your life in a shelter just because your old, a senior dog is just as important as a puppy, or any dog for that matter, I guess that is what your going to do with your dog when he gets old, if you can't answer my question, please don't respond !!

Eight is old for a St. Bernard. So he may have some special food needs for medical reasons. If he doesn't have special needs, then I would just leave food in his bowl all the time.

First I would like to say thank you for saving a shelter dogs life!!!! Good Job, We need more people like you!!!
Yes you what to feed him 2 a day. Yes they have to eat slow and not too much at one given time or it could bloat. This is very bad and if not treated fast he would die. So Good Luck

1) Maybe make up a box for her to keep her writing things in. Small diary type books, a pack of pens. Things along those lines. 2) Is there a place nearby you could get a gift certificate to for horse riding lessons? Maybe just a one or two time thing, I'm sure she'd love it. 3) Does she need anything for her room? New blanket? Decorative pillows?

ask the shelter how much and what they have been feeding him. you don't want to completely change his diet. this will allow for the easiest adjustment. realize he may eat more or less because of the stress of moving to a new place. be patient and keep up with your vet to keep a good eye on his weight.
good luck...shelter dogs are the best

The shelter should be able to give you info on feeding habits for your new dog. I would suggest also visiting a vet and getting a second opinion from them. Good luck.

Why are you getting an 8 year old St.Bernard from a shelter?? It's on its last leg. It might not live out the remainder of the year.

Twice daily feeding should be plenty.

Now 8 month old, different story. Best of luck with that.

In response to your irrational outburst:

I've always taken care of my dogs into old age.

But I also want to encourage you to "adopt" any number of our HUMAN seniors who are placed into nursing homes, as they are in the same aproximate situation this St Bernard is.

OH, and using your same logic, I suppose YOU will be placing your parents into a home when they get old...

Good luck with your endeavor.

It depends on your dogs weight and age. Check with a vet and they can tell you, or feed it what the shelter people have been feeding it, just ask them, it's very likely that they have spoken with a vet and know what he should and shouldn't be eating.

If you look on the can or food bag, you will see a guide that shows you how to gauge how much you should feed him based on his weight. Two meals a day sounds about right, we feed our animals 2 meals a day and they all maintain a proper weight.

If they eat or drink too fast they can get the bloat condition.
