I started on a low dose of methotrexate for RA. Has anyone taken this before and I would like to know your reactions to it. I am nervous about it because I know the dose is going to increase but I would do anything to get out of pain. Any comments or personal experiences with this would be appreciated.

Severe side effects of MTX are really only seen in very high doses that would be used in chemotherapy. For the treatment of RA you are likely to experience a little nausea, dizziness, photosensitivity(so please watch yourself out in the sun-wear sunscreen). MTX is first line treatment for RA....from most patients I speak with they do not complain of any difficulty with the medication. Best of luck

I have never taken this medication but a friend of mine was given this medication by her primary care physician and she's having a hard time with it. One of the symptoms that I've heard some others say can occur on this medication (and I think she mentioned this too) is that of nausea.

Another option that could help with some of your pain is that of Pain Management drs. They aren't just about medications and if you are looking to consider something alternative I would recommend looking for a dr that is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. These drs not only work with some of the conventional treatments but they also do a lot with alternative treatments too.

Your rheumatologist may have an idea on names that you can call and find out about their practice.
