It had been several years since I worked out on a heavy bag and I felt pretty good after my workout. That evening my leg started aching and for the last couple of days it's been really hurting me. It feels like the ball socket in my hip wants to pop out. Did I strain the muscle or is it possible that I cracked the joint? It hurts pretty bad but I don't want to waste a trip to the dr if I don't have to.

You'll only know that it's alright if the pain goes away in time. Give it a week and see how it feels then.

Here's what I would do. Go back and start kicking that bag some more. After you have kicked it for ten minutes or so, see if the pain eases up or gets worse while kicking it. If it eases up, you're alright and the solution is to kick the bag more. If it doesn't ease up or if it hurts more, then go to the doctor.

You've picked a sport where the normal condition is pain. Something is going to hurt all the time. If it doesn't, then you're not training hard enough.

You can throw your leg or arm out of it's socket when you miss sometimes. You see this in boxing, kick boxing and martial arts and is usually caused when the fighter is able to throw his techniques harder than what the area around the socket will handle.

Besides this you also have what they call muscle memory and that is when your muscles and body remember how to do something. Often times with people like yourself who come back after a lay off their body and muscles remember how to do those motions with speed and power. It's just that their bodies are not in the same shape and so they can hurt themselves or feel it later after working out. Students in my school are not allowed to throw techniques more than half to three fourths speed and power just for this type of situation when they first start back up.

Give it a little more time to rest and heal up. When you start back take a gradual approach to it and build your body, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and joints into shape by only going half speed and power. See if your injury persists or flares up as you can sometimes injure yourself to the point that things don't heal back as well as they were before. It does not sound like you cracked the joint but you may have strained or even torn some of the ligaments in the socket or the muscle surrounding the joint and socket. If the problem and pain gets worse or flares up then you are probably looking at a doctor visit to find out how bad the injury is and if just time and maybe a little physical therapy will heal it up or it is more serious.

Try to move your body forward as you kick or bend your kicking leg a bit while you kick. My foot and toes used to slap against the backside of the bag too. Not sure why your toes would slap the mitts unless you're kicking with your instep/foot. Let us know how that goes... Also, keep your foot at a 90 degree from your shin when you kick and don't let your foot wobble when you kick, the wobble makes your foot slap against the bag when you hit with your lower shin.

sucks, but if it keeps hurting, get it checked out by someone who knows their orthopedics. if it is really hurting and not just a soreness from training you probably should get it checked out. you might further be compensating for your injury throughout your entire body and that will cause more injury. keep your leg relaxed and dont overuse it. you might have jammed it, you might have just overused your muscles. if you cracked the joint you would probably be in some agonizing pain and the area would most likely be all black and blue.

It SOUNDS like a strain, but if I were you, I would wait another day or two to see if you get any better, and if not, you'll have to see a doctor ( :- / ). I'm assuming you can walk and whatnot, so I would suggest resting the sore area and messaging it. But it's important to see a doctor if you don't start feeling better within a few days.
