I'm looking for movies you may know of that make really good use of Dolby 5.1 to create atmosphere, etc.

We bought a 5.1 system and I dont think it has really had a chance to show its colors yet ^_^

There is a comprehensive list of low freq effects in movies that is maintained by SVS subwoofers. These include the pod racing scene in The Phantom Menace, Darla Rapping the Tank in Finding Nemo etc.

Off course this also means you need to have a set up that is capable of exploiting the effects in such movies.

If you want just over all 5.1 effects (not restricted to low freq effects) most action movies have a pretty decent 5.1 mix. I just saw Fast and the Furious (in DTS) and it really makes use of the surround speakers for stuff besides the usual zip, zing and screech effects that are associated with surround speakers.

I would suggest a Monster THX dvd. At least I think that is what it is called. When I installed my home theater I used the 3 Doors Down Live and the Hotel California Tracks. They can really create an atmosphere. Also Animusic might work for your system. For Animusic I would suggest a REALLY GOOD subwoofer. With a good sub you can really blow peoples mind away.

I found a link that lists about a dozen or more movies with information like: which version of the DVD to buy, which audio track to select, how many speakers to switch on (5 or 7) and which chapters to demo...Most of them are pretty good for showing off for your friends.

Hi. The original movie SPEED is a good one for both visual and sound. U.S. MARSHALS is great particularly the landing of a damaged 727 on a highway.

Any action flick will do the job. Make sure the DVD has Dolby 5.1 or DTS (if your receiver is setup for DTS) and you will be blown away.

When I go check out home theater components, whether audio or video, I always take the same DVD: Apocalypse Now.
