Hint 2: The Republicans controlled the Congress and the white house. There were German Bunds in many of our larger cities. Evangelists were coming into power because of the radio.

Dr. Nightcall: As usual wikipedia is being pushed in a direction that skims past the truth. Three songs were up for the honor of being the National Anthem in 1931.
1. America the Beautiful
2. God Bless America.
3. Star Spangled Banner.

Last Hint: In 1929 the congress passed a resolution that the Star Spangled Banner be the National Anthem. there was such an uproar that they drew back. There were other songs suggested, and then everything was dropped for nearly two years. But behind the scenes there were the usual bigots. The depression had begun and Republicans wanted to say one of theirs named the National Anthem. Many Americans wanted God Bless America but some powerful groups didn't. Finally Berlin took it out of the running and put it away.....angry because of the reason he had been asked to withdraw. He would not let it be used until Kate Smith asked for it in 1938.
Like many other pieces of history, the circumstances are being shaped to disappear any negativity.
The excuse--It is our National Athem and it shouldn't be besmirched.

Even though "God Bless America" was originally written by Irving Berlin in 1918, he basically set it aside. In 1938, with the rise of Hitler, Berlin revised it and re-introduced it when Kate Smith sang it on an Armistice day radio broadcast. By that time, the "Star Spangled Banner" had already been selected as the National Anthem.
