I know thousands of them. I was a Jehovah's witness for over 30 years.
They are as nice as the nicest people you know. They are also as bad as the worst people you know. They are EXACTLY the same as everyone else on the planet.
They truly believe that the rest of humanity is depraved and can only be saved by becoming one of them. They believe that if you are "honest hearted" and "right thinking," you will become one of them.
By cutting themselves off from social contact with the rest of mankind, they can preserve the mythology of the Watchtower. They have been led to believe that God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit chose their leadership to be the "Faithful and Discreet Slave" whom the master appoints over his belongings.
Having swallowed that, they will do anything they are told by their "Governing Body" because they believe that they speak for God. If a JW were to openly contradict anything printed in a Watchtower publication, they would be sternly corrected. If they did it on purpose, they'd be thrown out.
They claim this "disfellowshipping" is to discipline and try to reclaim the "wrongdoer" and to "keep the congregation clean." What it really is though is a mechanism to keep them isolated in their mind-control environment.
They are not allowed to think for themselves but are so manipulated they are incapable of seeing it without intervention.
They are victims. Some of them are "happy." I have known many sweet and loving Jehovah's witnesses. Their own natural temprament makes them that way. They are drawn to the witness environment because the JWs try to claim they have the "identifying Christian love" that proves they are the "true religion."
They are kept so busy with their "ministry" that they don't have time to stop and think that it might be a sham. They feel guilty if they miss one of the five meetings a week they're supposed to attend. They feel guilty if they haven't read every magazine and book they get as soon as it's off the presses. That is part of the mind control ploy of the Watchtower structure. Keep them so busy they don't have time to consider anything else.
Do I "know" any witnesses? I know them, Horatio. Most of them won't speak to me because I quit them. They will say vile things about me or anyone else who quits them. They will say that we "went off to the things of the world." They especially love to say that we "loved the things left behind" and imply or state outright that we are "immoral." That, in fact, is the only rationale they can use to explain how so many are leaving and have left them.
But really, the reason is because we suddently realized we were drinking Kool-Aid. [For those of you too young to understand what that means, look it up!]

Dear John,
Thank you for asking this as two separate questions because they are two separate groups entirely.
I know Christians who witness to the Truth of Jesus Christ and Him crucified and risen.
I also know (family members and others) who are Watchtower Witnesses. I cannot call them what you call them because their witness is about what the Watchtower says the Bible says rather than what God's Word actually says.
For His glory,
JOYfilled

Yes.
The name "Jehovah's Witnesses" is because they both witness personally and bear witness to others regarding God's personal name, his majestic personality, and Kingdom purposes. In doing so, they align themselves with Jesus Christ and the prophets.
(Isaiah 43:10) “You are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah
(Isaiah 43:12) So you are my witnesses,” is the utterance of Jehovah, “and I am God.
(Hebrews 12:1-2) Because we have so great a cloud of [Jehovah's] witnesses surrounding us, let us also put off every weight and the sin that easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, as we look intently at the Chief Agent and Perfecter of our faith, Jesus
(Revelation 1:5) Jesus Christ, “the Faithful Witness”
(Acts 5:38,39) Do not meddle with these men, but let them alone; (because, if this scheme or this work is from men, it will be overthrown; but if it is from God, YOU will not be able to overthrow them;) otherwise, You may perhaps be found fighters actually against God.”
