My professor wrote me a letter of recomendation and it was great. Is it impolite to not give him a thank you card or some sort of gift? And if I do get him a gift, is wine too personal?

Thanks for responding everyone! Now I am curious to know why wine is considered personal? it is just a drink?

I'm a teacher so I'll tell you how I would professionally feel (because the parents of my students give me gifts all the time). A card would be good and a small gift would be great but I think wine is pushing it. It could be misinterpreted. If the professor is a woman you could buy a pretty pair of earrings or a nice purse. If the professor is a man you could buy a nice tie or a briefcase (depending on how expensive you want to get). But a card would be just fine.

A note is fine. No wine, tho. Maybe chocolates or small gift of other food.
My favorite gift from a student (I taught casino card dealing) was a coffee mug, with a pencil and a ruler on it, and the words "Number one teacher"

A thank you note is fine, but wine looks like you want to date him. I'd stick with the letter/note just in case you need another letter in the future.

Wine might be too personal...the need is to be professional...What are you gonna get drunk with him?...One thing leads to another...Not good...How about some sort of food basket?...

A card will suffice, yet you provides them a contemporary in case you decide on. present taking part in cards or baked products are consistently known. in case you prefer to grant them an excellent contemporary inspite of the shown fact that, basically permit it come to you.

A handwritten thank you note is appropriate. Anything else could be misconstrued as your "purchasing" your great letter he penned for you.
Hope all goes with you!

yes I believe wine would be too personal. Just write him a nice letter of thanks. that's the most that should be expected.
