The Religious perspective is that truth is Absolute and it is the goal of mankind to discover this absolute truth which guides our actions and our way of thinking.

History displays that truth is Relative, even in such world religions where concepts are considered taboo and then normal (best illistration I can come up with is the consumption of pork byproducts which was, in the Old Testament considered forbidden and is now considered normal/acceptable).

My question is, how can we logically defend absolute truth when history and society display such prominent examples of relative truth?

The only way to logically defend absolute truth is to prove that truth is absolute with absolutely no wiggle room for anything.

This absolutely cannot be done.

Can you prove that everybody should believe everything exactly the same way? That's what absolute truth dictates.

Objective truth is absolute truth. So-called "relative truth" is not actually truth at all. It is just subjective opinion. A particular opinion may be widely accepted as correct within a society, but that doesn't make it an objective truth.

To say "truth is relative" is to assert something that can be deemed untrue and therefore defeats itself. If I say to you "I can not speak English" in the most perfect English you've heard, clearly what I just said is a lie. To assert that "truth is relative" you must absolutely assert it and therefore you defy the very thing you are trying to pass off.

Because we are human and relative truth is what we are all about. We say "oh that's true for you but not for me."

History does not display that truth is relative only that human beings are fallible and desire the make the truth relative.

The truth is what it is...it cannot be changed by our design.

I believe that some are relative and some are absolute.

The world is round is an absolute truth etc... where as many and most other "truths" are relative, to the person, situation, interpretation etc.

If you understand logic or math or science you know that truth is absolute.

The Dietary laws in the Old Testament were set up by God to keep people healthy. Today we know that pork needs to be cooked well done and then its safe to eat.

It was not possible for nomads living in the desert to keep pigs as livestock or to cook them.

By comparison, sheep and cattle are very clean animals.

So your understanding of history is lacking.

Morality you see displayed in other social creatures seems to be pretty much timeless. Stealing, deceit, not sharing when it causes the suffering of others, those are all pretty much wired into humans. But that truth really isn't under attack.

If I say, "truth is relative" that would make it an absolute statement, and therefore, contradict itself.

but, if I say, "truth is absolute", the statement supports itself.

Therefore, absolute truth does exist and his name is Jesus Christ. God bless.

Truth can not be defended, only FACTS.

Because both can exist simultaneously and are not related to each other.
