People always call for a referendum when they can't get what they want through the system.
You ask for a referendum if you think most people are on your side. You ask for government interference when you think the government is on your side. I doubt that you care what American citizens actually want. You're just looking at a great opportunity to get what you want because you have the votes.
Fine, put immigration up for a referendum. Then be prepared for everything else to go up for a referendum, too, including issues that you probably don't want up for a vote because you'd lose.

Ours is a representative republic. We elect Congressmen and the President and leave it up to them to make the right decisions. National referendum is not an option. Congress and the President have heard the American people on the non-amnesty immigration reform.
I have been telling my representatives I want the borders secured, first and foremost. Immigration reform is not a pressing issue. Since we have immigration laws now on the books, we don't even need a reform bill.
Unfortunately one of my senators is Arlen Specter. We traded letters on the border security issue, long before the immigration bill reared it's ugly head. Obviously I was not able to persuade him to change his emphasis.

And what good would it really do? They have spoken very loud and clear but what do the lawmakers do with it, just ignore it all and do what they want anyway. then they don't tell you what it will cost each one of us in the long run or what problems it will create just like the last amnesty did. Time for Americans to wake up and get someone in there that will listen to those that put them in office.

That would be an implied vote on the North American Union. Imagine voting that down. There would be suicides.

Because they don't really want our opinion. Right now we're probably seen about as nicely as flies at a picnic. We're screwing up their agenda and slowing down their plans for what "they" want.

Because this is a republic and not a democracy....That would mean too much power in the hands of ordinary people....

It's too complex an issue for something like that. Most people on this board don't even understand what the new bill proposes. They refer to it as amnesty, like it's something that 12 million people will get immediately and simultaneously.
