First let me tell you that I own a pest control company and what I will recommend is the complete treatment that should help you completely get rid of the fleas.
First, treat the pet with Capstar. This is a pill that you get from the vet that will kill all of the fleas that get on the animal for the first 24 hours. Second, use either Frontline or Advantage, these can also be purchased from the vet. Frontline can be used on pets 12 weeks old or older. Advantage can be used on animals as young as 6 weeks. If the pet is old enough for either product, switch back and forth between the two. One month use one, the next use the other. The reason I recommend this is that there are two main types of fleas that infest pets. One product works better on the first type and the other product works better on the second type. By using both, you make sure you have covered all your bases.
Once the pet has been treated, you must treat your home and yard. The best products to do this would include not only a killing agent, but also a sterilization agent. Inside, I would use Ultracide, if you can get it. (Many on line sites sell it.) Follow the instructions on the label! Wash all animal’s bedding and vacuum frequently. Throw out the vacuum bag or dump the catch container after every vacuuming. You can never vacuum too much! DO NOT STEAM CLEAN YOUR RUGS! This can hatch flea eggs and make your problem worse.
Outside I would use Demon WP mixed with Gentrol or Nylar, carefully following label instructions. Treat the entire yard, paying special attention to under bushes and low hanging branches. Most of these products can be bought at any Do-It-Yourself Pest Control company either on line or in a store.
Treating your house and yard is just as important as treating the pet!
It is also very important to stay away from the grocery store or box store products like Zodiac or Hartz. Many of these products can cause severe allergic reactions in animals.

There are lots of different sprays and shampoos out there to rid your dog of fleas, but the best place to get an effective one from is probably your vet. Once you have eliminated the little creatures, make sure you treat your dog regularly with Frontline topical treatment or something similar to prevent reinfestation. Also you may need to 'de flea' the house/carpets/furniture as fleas can live there too. Certainly you will need to wash your pets bedding etc. thoroughly.

Give your dog a flea dip immediately! You can get the flea dip formula at any pet store or even Walmart.
Then, to keep the fleas away, visit the vet and ask for Frontline flea and tick repellent. That stuff is GREAT, but follow the directions!
Good Luck! Gotta love our dogs.... :o)

NEVER put more than one flea chemical on your dog. it can cause seizures & could kill a small dog
use a thick soap such as Dawn dish soap & really lather him up. it will suffocate the fleas.
You can also get Capstar from your vet which kills all fleas in a half an hour.
flea collars are useless & flea powder is dangerous. you & the pets will inhale it.
get him on a good flea product from your vet - never an OTC flea product.
You will need to treat your house & yard as well

Fleas are a major problem this year. Your best bet is to get Frontline from your vet, and also treat your yard with granules. Do not forget to spray your pets bedding and carpeting if it is in the house. Bathe them with flea shampoo at least once a week, and a flea dip ever-so-often....blow dry! You would be surprised at how much a dryer helps. However, keep an eye out for dry and irritated skin due to applications of all of the above.

I know you have a lot of answers on how to get the fleas off your dog (flea bath) and keep them off (Frontline) but not too many answers on treating your yard. Get one of those pest sprays from Wal-mart you hook up to your hose and spray your yard with it. To get the live fleas out of your home, I recommend taking your pet with you to the park for a few hours and set off some flea bombs. Has worked every time for me in the past. Now, I treat my dogs (indoor dogs) with Frontline once a month and spray the yard at the beginning of summer and I haven't had any more problems in a few years. Good luck.

If you give your dog(s) heartworm pills (and I certainly hope you do), the easiest way to control fleas is by giving your dog SENTINEL heartworm pills with flea and tick protection built into the pills. I give my dogs the pills once a month. And, I never have to worry about fleas or ticks. If you are worried about possible side-effects, I fed my German Shepherd the same pills and he lived 14 healthy and happy years. (Sentinel is available at any vet and should only be given to your dog after he has been checked for heartworm.) Best wishes. Jim

Natural fix: go to a specialty pet store and get Brewer's Yeast and Garlic supplements. It may come in a pill or a powder.
I learned about this when I had a cat that was constantly covered in fleas. I bombed the house, had him dipped, used mouse, powder, and flea collars, but nothing worked for more than a week or so. I didn't want to poison my cat anymore, so I tried the supplement - and it worked!!!
