NO, they don't. Women are important, but a man has always been in charge of the lds church. a woman could not over through the current president either. The church is not an elective position. It is called of God and is a position of righteous guidance. It is believed that women are respected as well for their responsibilities as mothers and bearing children. Men on the other hand, do not have that place but are head of the family. They have what is called the priesthood. It is a right of, for lack of a better word, authority, that is passed down from father to son or another male priesthood holder. This is also the right to hold positions in the church as the fathers of the ward or church itself, like president Hinckley. and to the plural marriage, they don't do that anymore. People were being attacked for their beliefs, thrown into jail and such for that practice. That is why the practice of polygamy was changed.( if you look in the bible, polygamy was a practice there as well, just if you were curious.) the last time that polygamy was practiced was in the 1800's with the original prophet Joseph Smith Jr. The people who practice it either were members of the church and left and decided to practice it. Nowadays, if someone is caught practicing polygamy, they are excommunicated and are no longer excepted by the church. It is an abomination in the sight of the church.

Women may not be ordained as priests and receive the Priesthood. The President of the Church is the presiding priest, thus, no woman may hold this office.
Women do have positions of authority---as presidents of Relief Societies, the Sunday School, etc. Sherri Dew is a great example.

Up to and during the 1960's, the 'Relief Society" woman's organization had some considerably autonomy to direct itself and programs. At the inception of the infamous 'Correlation' meetings, the good bothers stripped the organization of what little authority if had, and made the Relief Society a sub-organization no different than a Sunday School Class.
The Church 'honors' women as long as they know their position: On their backs. They just don't smoke afterwards.

I missed that part where "my leaders" are telling me to stay home and have babies. I would love to stay home and not work (babies are probably not an option now.) Thanks for taking up for us, but ask just about any LDS woman who is active in the church if she feels deprived for not holding the priesthood. I can tell you, women are just as equal, have as much say, and is just as powerful, as any man in the church. (If I have to define this for you: holding the priesthood is servitude, not a position of power. Just as Jesus taught us when he washed his apostle's feet--the greatest of us are those who love and serve the most.) Did Jesus chose any women to be His apostles? No. Did he have a many woman disciples? Yes, He most certainly did. The New Testament is filled with stories from the early church of women laboring among the poor, ministering to others, and witnessing the truth of the gospel. Without these woman, how would the church have prospered and grown? Men and women are very much equal. At times their roles may be reversed, but God has given us our distinct tasks in this life with very distinct blessingc.

Probably not, but why would one want to be? Don't they seduce teen-aged girls into plural marriages? Didn't they used to?
