find daily calorie intake calculator on the net, enter all your stats and it will tell you how many calories you need a day to maintain, take off 300-400cal off that number and thats how much you need to lose.
eat 5-6 small meals a day (eat every 2-3 hours - it optimizes your metabolism)
5-8 servings of fruit and veggies a day
8 glasses of water
have complex carbs for breakfast - they give you energy
have protein (lean meat, legumes etc) for dinner - repairs muscle
cardio exercise 4-6 times a week for 30-50min (ideally 45min because the first 20-30min body burns carbs and only then starts burning fat), light weight training (more muscle=faster metabolism)
dont consume foods that are made of white flour (white bread, cakes, pasta etc.), sugar loaded foods (cookies, icecream, candy etc) and nothing fried, oily.
ofcourse you can spoil yourself once in a while with a little treat:)

A good way to help your son lose weight, is to monitor his diet for starters. Too much junk food & sugared sodas/drinks, is not good. Make sure he eats healthy meals that include chicken, turkey, fish, & lean red meat on occassion. A diet rich in fresh veggies & fresh fruit is essential also. Make sure he gets into the habit of drinking water each day also, it will help in weight loss. Now, he's at an age where most are very active but if not, he should bike daily, play basketball outside/inside, baseball, rollerblading, & go for walks daily. Swimming is another great way to lose weight as well.

Engage in exercises with him. If he doesn't enjoy sports, maybe he would enjoy other exercises like treadmill, stationery bicycle, swimming, etc.

All of those are really fun activities that you can encourage him to do... maybe take an interest in your own personal health and encourage him to come with you!

Swimming is great. It's a great way to lose weight, tone up, and feel better. Walking is great fun... maybe hiking would also be fun for the both of you to spend quality time doing. Maybe a family membership to the Y would be good!

Also, you might want to just eliminate junk food from the house. Keeping it around, in general, isn't really good for anyone.. and if you have it around and others are eating it around him it will just cause him to be demoralized and perhaps eat more.

Be understanding and treat it as a fun adventure! If he sort of rejects your idea of doing it with him, encourage him to still do swimming at the Y or something without making him feel inadequate. Positive reinforcement goes a long way!

don't make him lift weights, because they'll stunt his growth. but some ways you can make him lose weight is not to buy any unhealthy snacks or food when you go grocery shopping. buy tasty healthy ones. also buy some healthy cereal. When you make dinner at home always make a salad. and when you go out to eat, NO FAST FOOD. For exercise you can put him on a soccer team, or a basketball team after school, instead of have him come home from school and watch TV

Cardio exercise is the best and healthiest way for younger people to lose weight. Buy him a bike and take him to the park or whatever for a 30 minute bike ride or try and find a local football or crosscountry team he can join. Also if you buy the food in the house try to be aware of how much junk food is around for him to be eating whenever he wants. If its not in the house he can't eat it.

Make sure he exercises and also make sure his diet is healthy. Take him to a physician or dietician and get his glands etc checked out too. You care enough to post here, so do something real. He's 11.... it's totally fixable :)
