Mine only barks if you put him in the crate and he doesn't want to be in there or if my husband walks out of the house and doesn't take him with him. Other than that...he usually isn't that yappy.

My sister's has only BARKED once! Someone accidently stepped on her tail so I understand. Mine barks when someone is at the door or a stranger comes up to us. She has barked a couple of times when she hears another dog on tv but only once or twice and she quits. I do not mind it. The funny thing is is that she has a deep bark. People think there must be some big dog in my house but when I open the door she is so tiny. So I would have to say that people always say they are yappy but I would have to say ours are not. But ours are not miniatures.

If you have a close bond with your dog, of what ever breed, your behavior will influence how much it barks. My dog doesn't bark in the house, except to tell me "someone is here" (usually after the back door is opened!). I tell her calmly and quietly (so as not to 'bark' myself) not to 'shout' in the house. If she barks outside, I look to see at what, and have her come inside. Only once did I tell her to chase what she was barking at (it was a squirrel). Just never yell if your dog barks, that is understood by dogs as barking. If you are barking, the dog should bark.
Smaller dog breeds are generally more vocal, and more aggressive.

I have two of them and they do seem to like hearing their own voices. This habbit can be controled, but if they sence any danger (ie a leaf blowing across the yard) they will not cease to let you know.
