I fill my bird’s food dishes up to the top every morning. I have two African Grey Parrots. They pick at it and eat on it all day. They throw half of it out. My question is: Do you leave food out for parrots all day? Or do you pick the food up and give it to them on a schedule? If so, how often should I feed them? They are sooooooo messy with their food. They are on a pellet diet and that is what I have trouble with. I also switch out fruits and veggies and I will make them eggs, pasta, rice, etc. but they gobble that stuff up. It is the pellet food they like to play with and make a mess out of.

Stop filling the dish of pellets to the top. I have only touched my pelleted dish once a week if that. The veggies they got twice a day.

They got the veggies and rice in the morning and what i eat for supper when i eat.

I use Roudybush, so that can go into a powder and they will still eat it. Pellets are to be used as a maintance diet, not like a seed diet where you have to fill a dish everyday.

You are to feed them as a child, with a variation of foods, pellets are to be used a substance if nothing else is available.

Good Luck!

Being the owner of 4 large parrots, I know how messy they are. They like to play with the pellets so I have small trays sitting underneath the pull out rack, and they catch a lot of the dropped food. The trays are about 8x10 and no poop gets on trays that small. I do not fill the dishes full because that just affords them more opportunities to play around. I feed table foods/fruits/vegetables too, but from my hand and I interact with them or am cleaning the cages so they associate it as positive. Keep lots of toys on hand, they don't have to come from a store. You can give them toilet paper rolls, cardboard boxes, paper bags, Mc Donald's toys(w/no computer chips or batteries), mega blocks. I buy lots of toys at the Goodwill for really cheap and once a week the chewed up stuff is discarded. It really does help alleviate boredom.

a lot of birds trow there food and just play with it i had an African Grey that dipped his food in water which made the whole house stink
pellet diet is the best for your bird so stick with it just try to give very small amounts so not to get loads of waste
you could also try taking it away to teach them they are not aloud to throw it
but like my blue and gold macaw they all do it

If pooping a lot is a problem to clean up, i would suggest a goldfish as a pet, for most pets do have that problem, there is programs out there to tech your bird to only poop in their cage or it specific spots in the house. Now where food is concerned they should be on a fruits and veggies (as wel as other healthly foods) diet firstly, pellets should be offered to them at all times, even if they do throw them. there are many books out there that outline the needs of parrots like yours. a litte research on your pet before owning them is always helpful.
