My dog died 5 days ago. My parents buried her when she died. I wanted to cremate her, but they didn’t do it for some reason. I was just wondering: can I dig her up and cremate her still? I am not sure if cremation companies accept decomposed bodies…but at the same time, I really do not want to dig her up and see her rotting body, if you know what I mean. I am quite sure that after 5 days, her body is decomposing and a not so pleasant smell is being produced. Right? I am ignorant when it comes to this (will do research), maybe someone can help me out here. I am so angry that this animal that I loved and respected so much is underground and rotting but I think I may just have to deal with it and move along. I think it may be too late to cremate her, but I really do not know for sure. What do you think? Also, if anyone knows, what will happen to her body in, say, a month? Will she be completely decomposed in a year? Thank you all.

Sweetie,
You should be remembering the good times with your dog. The goofy things she did and how happy she made you.

Thinking like this about her rotting corpse is not good for you.

Remember that her "job" was to make you happy. She was happiest when you were happy. Happiness honors her memory.

Consider volunteering with a shelter. You will see hundreds of puppies and dogs. It will get your mind off your sadness and onto other things.

You don't give any idea where you are located, but I would think that after 5 days, regardless of the average outside temperature, what you would discover would sicken you and would be a memory you would never be able to get rid of. I live on an acreage and lost a calf this winter when the temps were so bitter and cold. We buried the calf and 3 months later all I found was an indentation in the ground. The bones will last for a while depending on the size of your dog and eventually be reabsorbed into the soil. Please don't be too hard on your parents, maybe finances were an issue or maybe they found your pet after it had died and it had already started to smell. If they are generally good to you in most things and take good care of you, I imagine they only meant well. I have lost pets too and it is never an easy thing.

Did you know that cremation only makes our environment worse? In fact, it will soon be made illegal to cremate anything. In respect for your dog, leave her in the ground.

you need to call the vet you plan on taking the body to and see what they say.
Sorry about your loss.
Hope everything works out for you
