Don't laugh, don't yell, don't hit. A simple, "Rover, no." will be best. But if you pay any more attention, the behavior has been rewarded by your attention. You can also turn you back on the dog. I had a cat that thought the word 'toad' was the worst punishment in the world. If a cat can understand, "bad toad", a dog should be easy, right? Good luck, my dog still thinks 'bad dog' isn't always that bad. (Maybe I should go back to "bad toad.")

Reward the behaviour you want and ignore the behaviour you don't. By this I mean actively turn your back on the dog when it misbehaves - walk out of the room. rewarding can mean giving it a small treat (very small or it will get fat), and speaking to it praisingly in a high-pitched voice. ;Good dog' is more than enough. Be consistent in the behaviour you expect and the dog will cotton on quickly. You are its pack leader and it wants you to like it.

Check out Cesar Milans website!
He says to never use your dogs name when you are repremanding them. Basically their name means "come" to them. If they are misbehaving, correct them immediatly with a loud "SHHHH" sound. This will stop them doing what they are doing at that moment. For more information on this type of behavior modification, seriously check out Cesarmilan.com!
and like the first poster mentioned...keep them excersised! WALKS WALKS WALKS!
