It's an entirely reasonable response - not just because people you're close to are dying, but because it's the unvarnished truth. We all die in the end. Life is a terminal disease. What makes the difference between 'existing in that knowledge' and 'LIVING despite it' is just the spin we put on our lives. We CAN give it meaning and purpose - perhaps yours is to be able to help and support the dying and the survivors and realise how much you have given to people in that way. Or it might be something completely different. Ultimately our experience of life is simply what we put into it and how we understand that. Read Yann Martel's "The Life of Pi" - I think this explains it well in a fictional rattling-good-yarn sort of way; or Viktor Frankl's "Man's Search for Meaning" which is more theoretical but not a difficult read and full of truly uplifting - if also at times harrowing - stories of the Nazi concentration and death camps.

Are you asking "What is the point of living?" If it seems as though everyone you care about is dying, that is a perception. Not everyone is dying. You aren't either. People die when it is their time, as you will. You don't know what tomorrow will bring. Maybe you are supposed to save a life five years from now. Perhaps you are to parent a great leader. Anything is possible. Sadness and grief can make you feel like you want to die. But ask yourself this, "Do I really want to be dead, or do I just want to be in a coma for awhile to numb the pain?" Death is a long-term solution to a temporary problem.
