Yeah, "nobody" is right. Canidae is the best "quality" for the money-no contest. Royal Canin, though, is considered a low grade dog food. There are probably over 50 brand names of good quality dog food. You will never see any in a grocery store-you must purchase it either on line or at the pet supply store. Go to 'whole dog journal' on line and look for their article on dog food-they have 48 brands listed of good food. Usually foods that Veterinarians push is either a very low quality or for some specific diet. Don't shop at the Vet for food. Pet Supplies Plus has had the very best selection I have ever seen.

use this site to find a food the very best foods are 6 stars and are designed to be closest to a dogs "natural" diet in protein, carb and fat contain using ingredient closest to what they would eat, ther are no grains since grain is not a natural food for them

5 and 6 stars foods are all made from human grade ingredients and do not contain chemical preservatives or ingredients that could cause cancer, Catergory 5 includes grains but the meat content is higher than the total grain content

Flint river foods are rated as either 2 star (poor quality) or 4 star (okay but not great, meat content is less than the grain content)

You don't not need to look at food based on breed because all breeds have the same digestive tract, where the diets needs vary is if you are doing performance work with your dogs and they are expending huge amounts of energy, then it becomes even more important to pick foods from category 6 since they are low in carbs and feed some extra fat with it to lower incidences of muscle and joint injury and to help maintain hydration

I feed EVO RM a 6 star food, I have dogs ranging in age from 1 years old to 10 years old, 15 pounds to 84lbs, one has lupus an autoimmune disease diagnosed 3 years ago when I adopted her but still is in great shape and diet is minimizing the severity

Here are a few that are good: Solid Gold, Wellness, Canidae, Timberwolf Organics, Innova Evo, California Natural and Artemis Fresh Mix, there are several more but these are really good. They may be a bit pricey initially but they come out cheaper because you feed less. These are 100% human grade dog food with NO corn, wheat, soy, grain fractions, fillers or by products – and naturally preserved.

Never feed your dog Iams or any other advertised commercial dog foods. They are extremely bad and can even cause cancer. They have hooves, horns, beaks, chicken feet, intestines and chemicals in them. Choose from these great brands Innova, Canidae, solid gold, Merrick Timberwolf, Wellness,Orijen,Go Natural Grain Free,Newman's Organic,Organix Organic. They are harder to find but the manufacturers will usually ship to your door. Please your dog deserves better.

My dog eats every last bit of the Canidae All Life Stages food.

Or Timberwolf, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, Wellness, really anything with no by products, soy, and corn.

Stay away from foods that have corn, by products, animal digest, colors, sweeteners, artificial preservatives, in them. Many people avoid wheat as well, but if your dog is not sensitive to it, it is fine.

Flint River Ranch is good, and it has two wheat/chicken free formulas for food sensitive/allergic dogs as well. (Fish & Chips and Lamb Millet & Rice)

innova, solid gold, wellness, chicken soup for the dog lover's soul, timberwolf organics
all foods that contain no corn or soy products which are often used as fillers and dogs get no nutrition from. also none of the brands i listed contain animal by-products which is the crap left over from meat processing, all the stuff humans will not eat.

Innova, Canidae, Solid Gold, Natural Balance are all very good foods.

Science Diet and Iams are crappy foods with an expensive price tag.

For a Bassett Hound, it would probably be either Purina Dog Chow or Iams. I always get Purina Kibbles n' Bits for my Beagle and she really enjoys it! Iams is great if your dog is sort of plump, if he/she is I would reccommend Iams Weight Control. My dog usually eats the turkey and gravy for both brands. Kibbles and Bits has vegetables in it so that is more of a balanced diet, but it costs like a $1.00 more.

Hope that this helped!
