Like the others said, it is not against the law to ask for ID.
But it is against credit card policy when the card is properly signed.
If a complaint is made to VISA, MC, etc., the store could face a warning, or a stiff fine, or lose the ability to take that brand of card.

It is against credit card policy in all states and against the law in some states to have to pay a fee for making a purchase with a credit card. It is not illegal to pay a fee when using a debit card (when used as a debit card)

It is legal. Once upon a time credit card companies in the USA only reguired a signature. This is still the case but many merchants have been stung by people using stolen credit cards and the signatures not matching (hence refusal of creit card companies to pay the merchant). So now some stores ask for ID. Unfortunately, many now just look at the ID and still not check the signatures (so the problem is not solved as professionals can make fake ID to match name on credit card).

I was peeved off about this for a while and even refused to show my ID at times. While I was never refused the purchase, I looked like jack *** at the counter. So now, I just show the card like a good customer.

No it's not unlawful and look at this way, if your credit card is stolen and someone uses it at a pricey store (say Nordstroms or a boutique in Beverly Hills) and they didn't ask for ID.....how would you feel? Given the fact that you probably would end up not being liable for those purchases, you still have to go through the headache of filing a police report and going through all the steps to get the problem resolved. I am more than happy to present my ID for credit card purchases. It tells me that the employee is doing a good job and it gives me confidence in continuing to do business with that establishment.

No its not unlawful. The credit card companies have a policy that ID should not be needed however stores seem to make up their own rules/terms.

It's not illegal as long as the store asks for ID from everybody. If they just randomly pick people to get IDs from, and not because the card wasn't signed or whatever, then it does become illegal because they are practicing discrimination.

the respond to your enormous question is particular! companies are prohibited from demanding an identity from customers. companies don't make it less demanding for CC robbery. No they are actually not. they are honoring their contracts. finally, it is not your accountability to hint down the criminal. bypass away that to the police. document a declare at the same time with your economic enterprise for the charges you probably did not make. The enterprise wont lose because of the fact the CC companies assume all criminal accountability.
