Why must they actively convert people of another faith instead of helping the lost and the homeless?

To the forth respondent:

I'd have to conclude that both sides were wrong and that it was a tragic and fatal error on the part of the leaders to allow that to happen, since noone should ever be punished like this in a conflict over religion, race, land and other issues.

They do all those things. What do you do?

Um, you do actually realize, I trust, that "helping the lost and the homeless" is in no small part what missionaries do? Missionaries are and have always been the fearless people digging wells nobody else will dig, seeing to the well being of people nobody else will care for, and yes - tending to the spiritual needs of people everyone else has forgotten about.

Rather than worry about how missionaries lack in this area (which is to say, not at all) perhaps this is an opportunity for some navel gazing.

What have you done for the lost and the homeless?

Being a missionary is to renounce one's very own existence to help others. that's something you realize could take place once you're out interior the sphere. i replaced right into a missionary in India and did not locate this physique of innovations. i got here across the Indians to be plenty nicer than the folk here in united statesa. and that i felt plenty safer there interior the greater effective cities than I do in say Baltimore or Washington, DC the place I stay. even though, i ought to work out that taking place in small villages there the place there remains various superstition. How is that any distinctive than the crimes dedicated against Muslims contained in united statesa. because 9/11?

We support a christian orphanage/church/school in Haiti. They were christian before we knew of their need. We now FULLY support them. People sponsor the children so they can go to school and have food to eat. I have been there 2 times and don't know the language (except for just a little conversational) so I have never tried to convert anyone.

Are you so narrow minded that you think missionary work is all about converting? It is about loving and helping people.

Most people convert because of the kindness that is shown to them and because they are searching and want to convert.

"Jesus said to go into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature"

Sometimes "preaching the gospel" is just loving and caring for someone like Christ did for us.

Being a missionary is a definition of "walk your talk"

They actually do help the lost and homeless. Ever hear of the Salvation Army? Just a few years ago American missionaries were captured by Muslims, they were asked to convert, when they refused they were tortured, they still refused, they were publicly bull whipped, they still refused, they were crucified and burned, publicly. Next time you want to talk bad about missionaries, now what they are about.

No.

"Why must they actively convert people of another faith instead of helping the lost and the homeless?"-because their delusion is to the point where they feel they need to convert everyone else to believe the same things.

Would you have us to travel thousands of miles to another strange land, risking at times, our lives, only to feed, cloth, and give drink to the needy and homeless, without any regard to the people of that land, and to their eternal, immortal SOULS?!!! I dare say, this would be a nearly total waste of time!
If I came to your house which was on FIRE and fed you some food and prayed for you, but did absolutely NOTHING to help put the FIRE out in your house, would that prophet you anything?!!!

(copy and paste of an old answer i gave)

Christian missionaries help in the hopes that they can convert those that they help. If they knew, beyond a doubt that they would be unable to convert people, do you really think they would still bother?

A "missionary" is, by definition, someone who attempts to convert others to their beliefs. So they help they give basically equates to "hey, you look hungry. I'll give you some food if you come to my church." That's kinda sh*tty if you ask me.

Many (not all) missionary groups actually REQUIRE conversion before they "help." And statistics show that of those who do supposedly convert, approximately 94% are only pretending to convert in order to receive the help they need.

I don't believe in Christian missionary work, I think they've caused a lot of harm.
However, they believe that they are saving souls. They don't discriminate between souls that are faithful to another religion and souls that are looking for one. To them, they are doing the Lord's work, even if we consider it meddling.

Or how about these Mormon Missionaries clashing with the Native heathen? :-)

Or how about Chavez kicking out 'missionaries' from his country due to thier poor impact on society?

Unearthed Indian Remains Yield Detail Of Massacre
By Paul Foy - Associated Press

The event had been recorded in historical accounts as involving Isaac Morley, a leader of 225 settlers sent to Nephi by Brigham Young, the second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

``We have the personal journals of two women who witnessed this event and described it as a heinous act of murder,'' said Rood. ``This is a great example of archaeology and history coming together.''

It's called annoyance selling. They keep repeating their product spiel over and over until you get so sick of them you say "I'll take it," just to get the salesperson to shut up.

Ask any who say they help the lost and the homeless, also, about the caveats they hang on their help....like listening to sermons or being proselytized while being fed. . . . and a lot of the food they eat is government surplus (to keep prices stabilized) that our taxes pay for.
