someone left food here when i got back-microwavable rice. i will guess it counts in the same way as cooked rice with storage- it is still wrapped and unopened, at room temp, and left for more than a day?

the only other food i am wondering about is a bridie and pack of sausage rolls- usual packs of 3+ from supermarkets. these have both been opened, obviously already cooked before going on sale, again at room temp.

i thought the sausage rolls might b ok left for a day but no more, but prob wrong. not sure on most microwave rice, isnt this stuff all dried out rice and already been officially "cooked" before going into the packaging?

i know if im in doubt i should throw the lot out, but was annoyed at the lack of info on most food storage websites on how long any food can be left at room temp for- is it really only a couple of hours if its not refrigerator, freezer, or dried food? thanks for any info

thanks everyone for the info! yes, a bridie is like a pasty, but traditionally contains mainly beef and onions (most common is the Forfar Bridie), while a pasty (most common is the Cornish pasty) filling is potato and swede.
ps- didnt know i was on yahoo india-haha im in scotland!

Any perishable food that is left out for an unknown amount of time should be disposed of.

Rice is extremely unsafe at room temperature for even half a day. Count as cooked rice never leave it out. When cooked, straight in the fridge, then to the table. Some people use cooked rice dishes for a buffet. They place the rice dishes out immediately thinking it will be OK. At room temperature the bacteria on rice multiplies at an alarming rate and will give you a very nasty tummy ache and diarrhoea. Can be kept for a while in a fridge but be careful.

Same applies to sausage rolls. The ones from the supermarket are OK until sell by date in the fridge. Never leave for long out of the fridge. Perhaps a couple of hours, I never touch sausage rolls once again from a buffet in case they have been placed out ready for a few hours.

I have no idea what bridie is.

I never use microwave rice but would assume the same rules apply as normal rice. I am afraid it is true only a couple of hours for most buffet food. Dried food not sure.

At weddings or parties where the food is a buffet lots of people get 'dicky' tummies the next morning, putting the cause down to booze or other reasons. Usually it is the buffet food and in a lot of cases turns to food poisoning.

Went on a Hygiene course and found it fascinating. You would not believe the horrendous info there is on food. It is enough to put you off eating anthing you have not prepared yourself. The bacteria multiplying is slower or faster at different temperatures. I cannot find the booklet or I would give you precise info. Room temperature is the most dangerous.

I will turn my paperwork upside down and search for the booklet, I am sure I have it somewhere. If I find it I will get back to you with precise figures. Should it turn up in a few weeks time like most of these things do I will put a question up and give info in that.

Sorry, throw the lot out.

I would say rice cooked and left must be teeming with naughties due to the thousands of small cavities in a measure where germs can breed.
Bridies (firth of) I have only had freshly cooked. Are we talking about the same thing? (Like a Scottish pasty.)

not a competent thought ! leaving ANY arranged nutrition out ,with any mixture, uncooked products such as you defined ( to enclude sparkling eggs ) could be held for day's -all based -root-greens -some for months, vegetables no certainly one of those day's counting on ROOM TEMP.. earlier all could discover the money for an ice-field or refrigerator (plenty-later ) so grand ma say's in the city it replaced right into a cubbert in a shady-COOL place . in the country-( farm ) it replaced into -comparable or a ROOT CELLAR ( below-floor ) hi even pizza is going undesirable after an afternoon ?????

rice is the worst food for causing food poisoning
its the starch and moisture that allows for germs to repopulate really quickly...

i dont even trust rice left in the fridge for more than half a day...
