My 5 year old JVC Digital TV has developed a fault.
The picture fades to a narrow horizontal line, and the the Tv switches itself off.
Is this a major problem or can it be repaired ?

This is a common fault called "frame collapse". The frame output chip or the scan coils are faulty. If it's the chip it should be a simple repair. If it's the coils, get a new TV. Hope this helps.

I am afraid it is a major fault and its likely source would be the cathodic rays tube and/or its electric pulse plug.
Sorry man, but is sounds like you either replace the entire screen in that JVC box or buy a new TV.
My advice is go for the cheaper option - buy new TV. Consider purchasing a new LCD widescreen TV with some known quality such as (excuse the publicity) Sony or Samsung. They are very much cheaper these days and you'll get them HD ready. The Digital tuner you can buy separately from any brand cheap.
