I would keep it basic, and since its a study room, a desk and chair for you to work at. I would keep books on shelves rather than a bookcase, which would just take up more floor space.

If the room has a closet, or a cupboard as you say, I would keep my supplies and things I don't need on a daily basis in that. Keeping everything organized certainly helps, and that everything has a place.

Paint all the rooms the same color - or within a shade of each other to create more visual "flow" or connection. No dark paint! White trim/molding near the ceiling can make a room appear taller as can hanging the curtains above the window sill. Maybe an almond/wheat or pale green? Get rid of the black floor tiles if you can! Wood looks homey and the newer laminates are easy to install. If you can't afford that than a good rug in a lighter color would help. Small kitchens can look really cute! Even if it's not much of one you need to define it as the kitchen area. Perhaps a dividing curtain or screen - or if that makes it look smaller at least different curtains/fabrics and a small bistro style table will help. Something vintage? Check your local library for great idea books -- Decorating Dreams on a Budget (Amazon may carry it as well ) is a fun little book with practical ideas! Thrift stores, yard sales and antique stores, even ebay can help you find nice things for less!

Yes, agree with above answer... mirrors definately make a room seem larger.

Windows can appear larger if you extend the curtain rod wider than the window, plus curtains opened are against wall instead of blocking window views and light.

Don't be too afraid of paint, even darker colors... a blind study was done and people were asked to estimate the size of two identical rooms, one was light colored another was darker, estimates were within an inch! Keep ceiling light colored though, otherwise ceiling will feel lower!

Clean and Organize the room first. Then put everything into its place. Then try moving stuff around like your desk and cabinets.
Hope this helps. All the best

Sounds corny but mirrors make the room look larger.
