There are varying opinions on this, but many scholars believe music is acceptable as long as it does not violate Islamic teachings and does not promote immorality.

What is "haraam?" Is it like out T'chindi or forbidden? Certain music which opposes Islamic teachings would of course be "verboten" among the "fellaheen," just as hiphop is repugnant to say JW's and sensible Canadians as well as this Pagan for reasons of morals in addition to possible religious controversy. I have belly dancing lessons imported from an Iranian source for instance which I use in my excercises and the music is quite restful for reflective as well as active moments and my cd collection does include Arabian as well as Phillipine, Mexican, N/A artisans as well as Yank and Brit rocknroll and African jazz/blues. Guess I am just among the overprivileged Yanks because I can speak Spanish, relish foreign cuisine and correspond with an Israeli online as well as have a face to face conversation with a visotor or a US citizen of any national origin and btw, am an anime enthusiast. Something I have in common with the Christian as well as other dieties, in that "God was not the only one whom so loved the world ouside of His POV." The standards of your country's citizens may differ from mine, but that does not make them less interesting or inferior to mine.

There are so many viewpoints. I asked this question a while ago. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvPPI2in5R7B6H3nRf4mqvDty6IX?qid=20070511130401AA8xsOY
In my point of view, music is haram. Music distracts others from learning about Islam and listening to the Quran. Remember, if we do good to avoid all these things in this life, inshaAllah we'll be able to do those things if inshaAllah we are rewarded a place in heaven.
This website explains best why music is prohibited. It gives a really detailed, really good answer. May Allah (swt) help us do what's right, ameen. http://qa.sunnipath.com/issue_view.asp?HD=1&ID=1786&CATE=142

Yes, music is haraam. It's because it is one of the tactics of Shaytaan to mislead you. The Prophet (SAW) even said that music is the voice of Shaytaan HIMSELF!!! It is his weapon to misguide you. Music is also scientifically proven to make a person think and act wrong. In other words, IT PROGRAMS THE HEART! And there is no difference of opinion of scholars--music is haram if it has haram lyrics with haram messages.

‘music’ per se is not forbidden in Islam; what is indeed forbidden in Islam is the illegal string music which is so rampant in movies, television, radios, etc. which encourage ‘fahisha’ and indecency.
Allah Says in the Holy Quran Chapter 7 Surah Aaraaf verse 33:
33 Say: ‘The things that my Lord hath indeed forbidden are: ‘faahisha’ (shameful deeds) whether open or secret; sins and trespasses against truth or reason; assigning of partners to Allah for which He hath given no authority; and saying things about Allah of which ye have no knowledge.’
Singing in its essence is neither prohibited nor unlawful in Islam. Provided none of the commands and tenets of Islam are violated, it is permissible in Islam for one to sing, especially on joyous occasions like marriage, Eid, etc. if one wishes to do so.

Yes it is haraam, The reason is because Allah and His messenger prohibited it. Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “In my ummah there will be people who allow fornication/adultery (zina), silk, wine and musical instruments [ma’aazif]. Some people will stay at the side of a mountain, and they will have flocks of sheep. When a poor person comes in the evening to ask them for something he needs, they will say. ‘Come back to us tomorrow.’ Then during the night Allaah will destroy them by causing the mountain to fall upon them, while He changes others into apes and swine. They will remain in such a state until the Day of Resurrection.’”

I hear it being played by Muslims (and loudly) all of the time. But its only "their" music. I never hear them listening to anything "American" like rock & roll. But I think they like it because one time, I was stopped at a light and a young Arab guy pulled up next to me and asked me what station I was listening to because he "loved Bruce Springsteen." Unfortunately for him it was a CD so I couldn't help him.
