my dog has floppy ears. he is extremely active and shakes his head a lot. so, the scab keeps breaking open...and scabs over again. but, it's taking a long time to heal. i don't think the area can be stitched because it's such a pliable/tender area. and, i DO NOT want to put him under to perform stitches (vet of course). but, he would not be calm enough to get stitches awake/concious.

would some superglue on the tip help stregthen the scab? i could probably put some on the scabbed area when he's calm.

thanks in advance for ideas/advice.

You can try Liquid bandage. It has been told to me by my vet that it is safe to use on dogs with a difficult area's to heal.

I do have it in my med. kit for my dogs but have never used it just yet. Give it a try to see if it will help your dog.

Try and put some antibiotic oint on the ear!! Try and keep it clean. It will heal with time!!!

If it would start to bleed try and put a ice cube on the ear for a few seconds that will help with the bleeding!!!

Don't use super glue!! You can buy some stuff that will be in a liquid form and will dry and make like a dressing over the ear!!!
You can get it at wal-mart or many other stores. This works great on areas that can't have a bandage on it!!! It should be by the bandage section of the store!!

It comes in a tube and is blue I think in color!! It is easy to apply!! I have used it one me before that couldn't have a dressing. It should not hurt the dog either!!!

Good Luck

You really need to take your pooch to a vet. His ear will not heal without proper treatment. I sincerely hope the super glue question was in fun. Would you put superglue on your own injury? That's a ridiculous idea which would only make things worse and infect his ear.

Why is it you don't want him to be sedated for any stitches? He may not have to be. The vet may use a local anesthetic for it. Animals often times behave better at the vet because they are a little intimated and most vets know how to handle nervous pets. Sometimes their job is handling nervous owners who may be better being out of the room!

He could be shaking his head more because his ear is bothering him and he can't get at it to make it feel better. Your pooch needs some professional care and it's your responsibility to see that he gets it. Our pets suffer in silence for a long time because they aren't able to tell you "hey, I'm hurt. Fix this!" So bite the bullet, get over your own judgments/fears of vets, costs, etc., and get this guy to a vet for some care.

Anyone of these ideas would work and you might ask your vet for an idea on how to mend the ear. As for the super glue idea. Originally it was used to med wounds back in Vietnam but I would not suggest it it burns like hell when you put it on open flesh. The Dr's. didn't like to use it much other than dire emergency when they needed to close a wound long enough to get the soldier to a mash unit. I'm sure you can understand why they didn't like using it because the moment you use it it's hard to get off.

I know vets use surgical glue for this purpose - I'm not sure if super glue would be safe or not. You can also try bandaging the ear to his head, he won't like it but it will stop the bleeding. Ideally a vet would put him under anesthesia and cauterized the blood vessels to solve the problem for good.

Don't use super glue! The best thing would be to take it to the vet, but if you don't want to do that get disinfectant and some application that would help close up the wound such as a liquid bandage like aloe vera. if you have that plant take one of it leaves split it open and apply the gel onto the wound.

My dogs get taht too and what I use is a dab of batracin ointment mixed with neosporin to help heal it. Apply this to the area twice a day. It only takes a 2-3 seconds to touch it to the sore spot and you should not HAVE to battle your dog to keep calm long enough to treat it. What this most likey is, is from an insect bite. Good luck.

Antibiotic ointment a few times a day and it will heal without a scab.

I wouldn't use super glue, but there is medical glues that are made for things like that.. It would be better and help to heal..
