I have one sister and 2 half sisters. 1 of my half sisters has a kid with autism. Does that mean my children will have it.

I am assuming you are a child asking this question. This is certianly not a mature parent asking this question.

Having autism is not being "mentally sick". It is a pervasive disorder which can be very insignificant all the way to severe. And everything in between.

It is not hereditary and cannot be passed fron one person to another. There is some prevalence in some families, but this is not common.

Much more important than this, try looking at effective and healthy ways of parenting your future children -- and dedicate yourself to being a loving, supportive, active parent to your children no matter what their health.

Being autistic does not mean being "mentally sick," it simply means that one's neurological configuration differs from the norm in a way that is described with the label "autism." You can read my description of autism at http://tinyurl.com/29599g .

As to your question, you're probably slightly more likely than someone with no autistics whatsoever in any part of your family to have an autie kid, but less likely than someone whose parents are autistic, whose sibling is autistic, or whose niece (from a full sibling) is autistic.

If your kids do turn out autistic, remember it's not a tragedy. Remember that they're the same kids you had before the diagnosis. Read "Don't Mourn for Us." (http://ani.autistics.org/dont_mourn.html) And consult an autistic before trying any "treatment." (That part can be as easy as looking at various websites written by autistics.)

Not necessarily. I think that since it's your half sister that has a child with autism that your children won't get it. But... I could be wrong.

No. I checked into that with my doctor. My sister has 1 son with autism, of all of the grandchildren, he is the only one.

I really doubt it. it's not hereditary. autism is not "mentally sick". it's a neurological disorder.

No, could be inherited from the parent you don't have in common. Also, her husband could have the gene.
