There is no limit to the age you can start it i have seen students as young as 4 but they were very mature. MANY do not start until they are adults in their 20's and some as late as their 40;s and even into retirement age.

so no you are not too late at all.

go find a place that you like and you feel will teach you what you feel is important. just make sure you make sure the teacher is reputable and has credentials and a lineage.

beware of McDojo's and frauds. there are Many many good schools out there so I am sure you can find one. Its not the style that matters so much as the person who teaches you and you abililty and comfortability learning from them.

GOOD LUCK

Actually, you are watching too much TV. No offense intended, as in most movies involving Shoalin they give you the perception that you have to be young. You are in the preferred age range for 98% of instructors. If you truly wish to become a Martial Artist (Sage, Teacher, Healer, Warrior) then look for a teacher, a teacher who will not promote anyone under 18 to Black Belt (I know I'm a little too old school) Unless they are an exceptionally gifted and mature student.... then 16-17. Actually starting now and if you work at it you should be 18 around the time you test for Black belt. Sorry, I'm one of those dinosaurs that believes it takes a minimum of 5-7 years to attain black belt as there is so much to learn. I guess because it took me that long studying under a third generation under the founder of Okinawa Te. Direct lineage. Remember attaining black belt level means you have grasped the basics and are now ready to learn the "good stuff". That's why the first question is important.... Martial Arts is a life long endeavor; for some anyway.

No not too late: I didn't start until I was in the service. Just look for a school which has beginners classes for people in your age group:

You would be surprised at the number of people in their late 30's, 40's. 50's, 60's and even 70's who take up Karate.

If anything, 13 is a good age to start. You are just starting to grow into an adult body (as awkward as that sounds), and you are old enough to take it seriously and not horse around. Age has really nothing to do with how good you can get- you are only limited by your drive.

One of the great things about martial arts is that anyone can do it. It's not like gynmastics where you will be forced to retire when you are fifteen (this happened to me) or if you get fat. Martial arts can be modified to fit your age and physical capabilities.

I started karate when I was 18. Karate is not a sport. Maybe if you want to do Olympic Taekwon do (not karate, but a Korean art) or Judo competitions, but Karate (Okinawan) is a lifelong pursuit.

I started Tae Kwon Do when I was 44. That was 15 years ago & I'm a 3rd degree black belt now. Just find a school you like & get going. Good luck!

Of course not, some people say its better to start early but it really doesnt matter. Plus, you might not understand or have the strength and knowledge you do now.
