I know that some restaurants that are Japanese are not run by Japanese people. I'm not being insensitive, but how do you tell? I'm half asian and I can't tell Korean from Japanese. In language or people.

I had to laugh at this answer: "if they speak japanese. speak japanese. if not speak american".

Hint: American is not a language.
Hint: The poster might not even be in the US.

The answer to the original question is 'no'. It's not rude at all. If the restaurant staff do not understand you, they will say so. If they do understand you, the dialogue can continue in Japanese.

No more than it would be to speak in Japanese at a Bonsai club meeting. Thankfully, the Japanese Bonsai Masters, that present instructional demonstrations in the workshops, use the English language in the U.S.

It is strange to as for ramen with water, but if that is all they have not much can be done. On the side of your defense I would say I would have done everything the same, except I would have added it much more discretely. On the side of the resaurant, they had every right to throw you out for bringing in outside food, which is more than likely against the health codes. Either way do not feel weird, just don't go back. If they have no vegan/vegetarian fare than they don't need you business.

If you want you could greet the person in Japanese. If they respond likewise then proceed on in Japanese

If not, use English.

I used to frequent a really cool Mexican restaurant. The owner/cook was from Argentina!

You've got quite a few questions going on here! If you hear them speaking Japanese, they might be Japanese. So then start talking. If you hear something you don't understand, then don't say anything.

Unless you are certain of the language they are speaking, I suggest you refrain from trying to communicate in it. You could insult someone.
