Gresham, Gateway, Beaverton, Hilsboro, are not Portland. Well..Gateway is, but unless you like living among strip malls...the neighborhood of Rose City is nice and prices for homes are affordable. It's around 60th and Halsey. There is a MAX station at 60th and again at 82nd...both at or about Halsey. The area south of Sandy Blvd to the east of the Hollywood MAX station is also a nice neighborhood. If you look at a Portland MAX map, the neighborhoods starting past (east) of the Lloyd Center stops until 82nd ave are nice, close in Portland neighborhoods. (MAX runs parallel to Hwy 84 at least until 82nd) Laurelhurst is beautiful and really nice, but very expensive and not really walkable to MAX. Also, bikes are allowed on MAX and on the front of busses, so you can always bike to a MAX station.

I JUST moved from portland. I have 3 younger siblings youngest was 6 when we moved for my fathers buisness. We moved from a GREAT neghborhood named LAURELHURST. There is many parks, great for children. Yet not stranded in a kids place. We lived in the middle of the neighborhood, So maybe 2 blocks away was a pizza shop, market, starbucks, florest, elderly home and a teryakie resturant.
about 4 blocks south was laurelhurst park, a huge park, dog area, playground area, and a large lake with trees to climb and grass 4 running.
The schools are wonderful. Laurelhurst elementry school was 4 clocks from my house north. And just 2 or 3 blocks north of that was a max station. Fernwood middle school was a nice school, not walking distance. though i went to Davinci arts middle school, about 10 blocks. it is for both performance arts and visual.One word summing it up was perfect. Grant highschool is a wonderful highschool, a little farther so not walking distance but it is close, and also has public pool for the summers.
The bus station was at 1-3 blocks away in every direction. There is only 2 busy streets that i know of. Burnside and Glisan.but other than that i was able to run around across the streets with my brothers anywhere.the neighbor hood has SO many children. Where i lived there where kids from 2 to 16. So i had friends growing up next door as well as babysitters also. The entire place is very welcoming. I hope you look it up.

Laurelhurst is near the Hollywood MAX Station (used to live in Laurelhurst myself) and is probably the nicest neighborhood right along the line in Portland proper. Depending how far from downtown you want to want out home on the return commute, there are many opportunities out toward Beaverton and Orenco. Orenco Station in particular is transit-oriented development and has won several awards for its design and mix of single- and multi-family housing and commerical spaces.

gresham/fairview area. It is still smaller, yet close to everything. Max runs from Gresham, lots of parking, takes about 30 minutes to ride downtown on a normal day. PLUS, the schools in Gresham are better than Portland, and classes are still smaller. I live in the gorge area, but shop and play in Gresham area alot. If you can find something close to Mt. Hood Community College, prices are reasonable still and the neighborhoods are mostly cul-de-sacs.

I would recommend Woodstock neighborhood for a more affordable area than Laurelhurst. While there is no max line there is the bus line. Good Luck to you.

The MAX runs all the way from Gresham to Hillsboro, so you have a lot of choices. I'd recommend the west side for a young family -- Hillsboro, Beaverton area.

Gateway area is nice and close to stations. Of course the MAX goes out to Gresham too.

I'd try Beaverton or Hillsboro on the west side both of which have great MAX and Tri-Met bus service.

If you want to have a safe enviroment for your family the pearl district is the best bet.
extra tip; the homeless people downtown can get aggresive if they think your holding out on money, dont ever!!! tell anyone down there you have money unless it looks like they genuinly need help. good luck.

Gresham, which is on the east side, is the best. The west side has too much crime and gang activity.
