Just had my Rat Terrier spayed a few days ago and she has become quite nasty to me and my son when we get near her. She's growling and even nipping (hasnt bitten yet) if we get too close. I dont want to punish her for it, but I wont tolerate that kind of aggression much longer. She's normally very sweet

Update. She's slowly getting back to her normal self today, but when she's laying down, I've been leaving her alone. Her incision is healing nicely , no signs of infection. So I think it's just a little pain, even though she is on pain meds and on antibiotics. The funny thing is , she's taken my son's sweatshirt to sleep on and wont let him have it back...lol...(unless he bribes her w/ a piece of roast beef).

Thanks for all the answers.

Dogs can become aggressive when they are in pain and want to be left alone. That's their way of letting you know that she wants nothing to do with you right now. Dogs feel pain just like humans and wouldn't you feel pain a few days after having a hysterectomy? I know I would. Was she sent home with pain meds?? Some vets don't think that they need pain meds for when they go home but if you ask for some they have to give them to you. Call the vet and tell them what is going on and they'll be able to tell you if she should be seen (they'll probably want to see her to make sure there is no infection brewing up).Hope I helped.

Pain can cause that to happen and it can also be caused by the actual pain medication! Give her some time to recover and keep her as quiet and still as possible. Let her come to you for comfort. She sounds like she needs to nurse her wound alone right now. Don't worry, she should be back to normal in no time. She just needs to be left alone right now and kept quiet and calm. She will be sure to let you know when she is feeling better.

P.S. It was Torbutrol, used for pain and as a cough suppressant, that made my dog aggressive. She is a small dog too and the dose was a little too high for her. If you don't have pain meds, please get some. If you do, you may have to ask the vet about cutting back a little on the medication. My dogs aggression stopped when I discontinued the medication. She had never been aggressive before then.

Actually, spaying (and neutering, too) usually makes animals more docile. Because the procedure was so recent, however, it might be that she's scared, or in pain. This could lead to aggression. I would just leave her alone for a little while, make her comfortable, and see if she calms after a few days. If she is still acting strange in a few days, or if her behavior gets worse, I would call your vet and ask him what's going on.

That behavior is definitely not normal. I'd be concerned that she might have some post-operative problems - perhaps an infection causing her pain and making her act aggressive. I'd take her back to the vet for a look.

A dog in pain will become aggressive.....
You may want to take her back to the Vet and see if there may be some medical reason why she is in discomfort

A female dogs hormones male hormones rise she gets spayed. And she becomes more aggressive. With males when they get neutered there hormones drop and they become less aggressive.

She's probably very sore. A hysterectomy is quite a major operation. Give her time and space and I'm sure she'll be back to normal in no time.
