When u check in your deer u have a metal tag that is to be placed on the animal at the check station!
This gives the DNR proper info on the animal and you now have a legal transportation tag of the animal!

In Illinois you of course have to have a hunting license first and then a Deer tag or permit for deer. This tag has two strips to be attached to the deer at the time of the kill. A leg tag and an antler or head tag. This has to stay attached to the deer until you butcher it.

You used to get a plastic or metal leg band after checking the deer into the check station but now Illinois lets you phone in your kill. Then they give you a number to record on your tag to prove it was registered. Phone in is very convenient and save alot of time and gas since there usually aren't very many check stations in any given county. usually one or two at most.

You should be able to get all of you Dept of Natural Resources info. (DNR ) on line by typing in , Illinois DNR or whatever ever your state is. Most of the time you can complete the application for the tag on line as well as a hunting license.
Good Luck.
