The first thing to do is rule out absence seizures.

It will take a consultation with your pediatrician.

Count the number of times per day you see this take place and go to the doctor with the child.

"What Are the Symptoms?

Because they are usually quite brief, tend to strike during times of inactivity and closely resemble daydreaming or "being off in one's own world," absence seizures may pass unnoticed by others and go undiagnosed for some time.

Absence seizures fall into two categories: typical and atypical.

Typical absence seizures begin abruptly, last 10 to 30 seconds, and resolve themselves without complication. The person simply stops in his tracks (and/or mid-sentence), and enters a staring, trance-like state during which he is unresponsive and unaware of his surroundings. He may make fumbling movements with his hands, and there may also be eyelid fluttering, lip smacking, or chewing motions during the seizure. When the seizure passes, the person returns to normal, with no memory of the event and no lingering effects. Generally speaking, typical absence seizures have no discernible cause.

Atypical seizures are similar to typical seizures, accept that they tend to begin more slowly, last longer (up to a few minutes) and can include slumping or falling down. The person may also feel confused for a short time after regaining consciousness. While the cause of atypical seizures may be unidentifiable, they are sometimes traced to abnormalities in the brain that were present at birth (congenital) or from trauma or injury, or from complications from liver or kidney disease. This type of seizures may continue into adulthood.

Call Your Doctor If:

* You notice that your child is having spells of "being off in their own world" or staring spells or any other behaviors that may indicate absence seizures."

Blank Stare Symptom

My step sister had the same symptoms when she was younger. She has epilepsy.

It wasn't until she was in about 2nd grade that she was able to express that during that time the world stopped for her. How she realized there was a problem was when she was on the playground, kids would be in one place then when she was able to process what was going on around her they were in a different place. She was finally old enough to realize that wasn't normal since she never saw them move.

Her seizures when she was younger were "absence seizures" no shaking, no clonic movement, just a blank stare. The teachers saw it but no one realized they were a seizure. Just thought she was "daydreaming".

You need to have your son examined by a medical professional experienced in pediatrics. He is too young to know or express what he is seeing or feeling during those periods in time. It is impossible for anyone to know what is going on with his brain during those periods in time.

This could be nothing. However, if it not early detection is the best. Good luck to you.

our 15 year old daughter has advised us that she has had these zoning out incidents - I observed it for the first time the other day, she had just made her lunch and sat down to eat it then this blank look came across her eyes, her speech became short, I asked her what s wrong, she looked at me and abruptly said wait , I asked again what was happening, her reply was and abrupt just wait then her eyes briefly closed and the eye lids shuddered, then in a matter of seconds she was back with me and continued talking to me - this all happened within 15-20 seconds - anyone know what this could be? could it be epilepsy? lack of iron? she is doing very well at school and unfortunately on other occasions when she has had this happen she has either passed wind involuntarily and on one occasion she wet her pants - please help - my email address is scalaci@dodo.com.au

OK, the other answers could be right. I don't know if your son is already potty trained, if not, he may be ready. What he might be doing is actually realizing that for some reason his diaper is a little wet and this is really really common!!!!!! Good Luck. At 2, I think he probably is not daydreaming, as he believes the world is all about him and all the stimulation around him and that he can produce.

Depending on how often he does this it could be a form of epilepsy, whereas these "zoning out" are really micro seizures. You might want to get an MRI, or a CT scan, or maybe both scheduled for him.

My friend i appreciate your sentiment, but these people are a waste of time. They hate Obama for whatever reason they hate him.I suspect that if he came to their door and gave them a million bucks they would slam the door in his face(after accepting his money)The people who rant on and on ad naseum about this "racist "preacher are indeed the ones who are racist,as I have said 100 times.Unless you have walked a mile in a mans shoes you have no right to judge him.We all see things a little bit different, based on our surroundings and our upbringing,I seriously doubt that rev.Wright is a racist.I will bet what he is is a bitter man that has been treated badly in his lifetime and seen the results of the abuse others have taken, and most of it was done in the name of our country, granted its not taht way anymore, well at least its better. But you cannot undo 60 years of pain and suffering this man has seen. But these people know this in their hearts, they cant help hating him, they have been told to do so all there lives by the likes of fox news. The people spewing hate on here are the ones incapable of thinking for themselves, they just repeat what they hear over and over. Its kind of sad really, but they believe that they are right and anyone who disagrees is wrong. My world is not that black and white,I live in shades of grey as do most people who support Barack Obama

Just day dreaming could be what he is doing. On the other hand, he may have petit mal, and that should be addressed by the doctor. If possible, keep a 'record' of when he does it, how often.........time it. Then, you will this to explain to your doctor, when you do take him in.

You might want to have him checked for seizures. My step daughter has what are called abscess seizures that are just like the symptoms you described.
