I made a forum a while ago, and it just isn't taking off. It seemed to be doing well, but it has become sort of dead. I really want this forum to be a good one, I worked really hard at it. Any ideas about what I can do to make the forum more appealing, advertising for it, or just getting the members to stay active? Does it look okay? Please critique my forum and tell me what is wrong?

...and any active members that want to join wouldn't be so bad either... ;)

It can take some time and persistence to get a list going. I find that it is often best to have a list on Yahoo Groups because that's where most people go and it's easy to use. I've always had better participation there than elsewhere.
(Seriously, I'm not just saying that because this is Yahoo!)

Put info about joining your board in your sig file so that every email you send is a subtle ad for your group.

Put informational posts in it while it's getting started and let people know you've posted something new.

Contact pit bull clubs and let them know there's a new discussion forum. Just send a note to the main email addy and ask them to let their list know.

To get members to stay active you can post links to news articles, to other websites, etc and ask what everyone thinks or in general ask lots of open ended questions. As the list owner don't go in and answer your own questions... when the list members answer, add another question that builds on the other question to keep things going.

Don't be too moderation heavy... allow a certain amount of off-topic getting-to-know-each-other posting without letting it go overboard. Too much and people will leave, but too little and it's hard for the list members to get acquainted and they won't post.

Ask everyone to introduce themselves and start by introducing yourself, describing your dogs, how long you've been interested in the breed, etc.

Good luck! A good discussion group can be a great thing!

Forums are tough they require enough participation to keep it going try advertising with Pit Bull clubs.

You might get in touch with the webmaster of every Pit Bull site you can find that has links and see if they will put in a link to your forum. And in turn you set up links to their sites.
