i have been taking anti-inflammatories for several months because of herniated discs. i have recently been having stomache problems(burning, indigestion, vomiting blood) so i stopped taking them. my question is will i be able to take any type of medication in the future without upsetting my stomache, and if so what types of medication would be useful.

ive taken mobic, relafen, ibuprofen, aspirin, and aleve. all of which are too hard on my stomache and the doctors tell me that they are the cause of my stomache bleeding. plus they were never effective in relieving the pain anyway

thanks for listening

If you take Tum's or Maalox fifteen minutes before taking the medication it will coat the stomach and prevent the Severe stomach irritation. You can ask your doctor about this method, but it works very good for these medications.

Tylenol(acetaminifin) is the kindest medicine to the stomach. Your Doctor should really advise you on this subject.Prilosec will help cut down on the stomach's natural acidity, but don't take anything without the advice of your Doctor. He/She may be able to give you a shot or a prescription. It is not wise to self medicate when serious problems like bleeding occur. good luck.

A pain specialist, pharmacist (Pharm D), MD or anesthesiologist might be able to give you some alternatives to meds that won't upset your stomach.

There may be some topical analgesics that work as well, that won't irritate your stomach that the'd like to try, instead of having you bleed.

NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen and Aleve are well-known causes of stomach irritation. Relief of pain without stomach irritation was a reason behind VIOXX.

I took high doses of Mobic before the recommended dose was changed and it caused all kinds of gastrointestinal issues with me. Now all I can safely take is Tylenol or Tylenol combined with narcotics. You really need to speak with a specialist about what is safe for you in regards to your specific condition, and be diligent to do as they say.

I know how you feel, and I hope you begin to find some relief soon. Best wishes.

I believe talking to a specialist would be a good idea. In this kind of a situation, the decision is delicate and probably shouldn't be left to a bunch of strangers on the internet! This is a good place to get help but I believe you might have a serious problem that needs specialized medical attention. Good Luck!

I've been taking anti-inflammatories for almost 7 years. They are well-known for ripping up your stomach. Your doctor needs to prescribe ulcer/stomach medications for you when you take anti-inflammatories. I've always taken Zantac everyday. You can get Zantac by prescription or over-the-counter, but it's generally cheaper by prescription. Zantac will heal your stomach and prevent ulcers caused by anti-inflammatories.
