Go to microsoft.com and search for Powerpoint Viewer. It's free and you can view (but not create or edit) PowerPoint files.

.PPS is normally a Microsoft Powerpoint extension. Are you trying to download a Powerpoint file? Or a MS-Word document? (.DOC is a Microsoft Word exetension).

Also - you don't mention where you are trying to download these files from.... And - are you trying to open the files after download? Or just saving them to your system?
