If I am watching a 'live' sporting event on TV, how long after an event actually happens does it show on screen? I know digital is laggier than analogue due to compression/decompression, and satellite is slower still due to having to go into space and back. But what are the numbers - 2 secs? 5 secs? Longer?

For regular digital satellite, you are looking at around 4 seconds or so, but if you have HD satellite, the delay is longer due to having to process more information for the better quality picture.

It is slower lol. Correct though, the digital signal is at a higher bandwidth then analogue thus little bit longer to process Because we are broadcasting Analogue, SD & HD all at the same time. Kevin Rudd is set to cut out Analogue & SD in 2013. Also dependent on the Hz of you tv you'll find as well. Whether it be 50Hz, 100Hz or 200Hz. - Refresh Rate.

The actual delay can vary, depending on the type of content and the broadcasting/recording location.

An example of this would be comparing a UK news program against an American broadcast. Because the Uk broadcast is on our home network it can be pretty much broadcast instantly. But the american program would have to be transferred to our network and then broadcast. Therefore it will be a greater time behind, as it physically has to travel a greater distance.

There are also other factors that affect broadcast delays. These include differing transmission speeds or data rates between networks (basically the data has to be stored up into a buffer), varying physical dinstances and the type of carrier signal used.

Many broadcasters purposely introduce delays into live programs. One reason is incase something goes wrong...eg big brother is at least 15 minutes behind to allow editing and removal of swearing. BskyB introduces delays in the form of advertisements etc...

We have both digital and analogue at home and the difference can be anything from 1 to 3 seconds. Incidentally, the distance to and from a satellite is negligible as light goes 7 times round the world in 1 second!
