People seem to be too skittish when it comes to their own dog biting them. If your best friend or your own sweet mother did something that REALLY got on your nerves, what would you do? Probably yell or raise your voice or something. Well, since dogs really only have one way of communicating, barking or growling, if that doesn't warn you enough sometimes they will bite. I have a black lab/border collie mix, easily two of the friendliest and non-violent breeds. My dog, King, was napping one day and decided I wanted to play and me being the highly intelligent individual that I am, woke him up by shaking him! I don't know about you but if somebody did that to me I probably sock 'em one! Well that's exactly what King did, he got me!

Yes your own dog can turn on you even if you have had it since it was a small puppy. Unless you have done serious dog training, or your dog is a working dog and therefore subject to real obedience, you dog could be a potential killer.
Of course it also depends on the breed as some breeds are bred to fight or be guard dogs i.e. the Pit Bull Terrier, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Dobermans and many other breeds.
However, even a small terrier can kill a baby and many have!!!!
So if you are worried about your dog biting you or anyone else, get it to dog training, where they will also train you too!
The result in not getting you and your dog trained could be much worse if your dog does bite someone.

The answer is yes...of course....but that is also like saying....could aliens come to earth to enter the Miss Universe contest....yes.....but not likely.

Normally you build up a relationship with your dog. The dog will see you as their parent, or dominant dog.

Where dogs attack people in the home, then it is often other family members. For example, a man owns a dog, and the dog respects him as the TOP DOG, as it were. But the children of the family, and sometimes his wife, are not seen in the same way. So the dog is may attack them.

In my family I grew with a dog and all members of the family at various times, helped train the dog. Though as a child I did get a nasty bite from him once. (Not an attack). But generally he obeyed every member of the family.

So if you have a dog in your family, and you didn't train it, then it might see itself as dominant and attack you.

On the other, it might bite out of play or if hurt. But I don't consider this to be an attack.

Did you do something to him that hurt him or irritate him? Was it out of jealousy of your baby? It's unusual for a dog that you have owned for a long time to all of a sudden bite you. You should be considered the pack leader to him all along and for him to al of a sudden bite sounds unusual to me. I would need to know what happened before he bit you. It could be a lot of things. He could be in pain or jealous of your baby. Dogs usually give you some type of warning before they bite. Have you noticed any changes in his behavior since you had your baby? He may have been trying to tell you things and you ignored them (unconsciously, of course). Then he finally felt like he had to get your attention by biting. Try to look back and determine why you think he did this. Trying to understand what he is feeling helps you understand why he bit you.

Yes, if he or she has a reason to.
Signs that a dog will bite include:

warning snaps and growls
"freezing" body language, hard stares, often with low growling

Do not ignore signals like this. If your dog is doing these things, something is wrong - and it's your job to 1. leave your dog alone, and 2. figure out what the problem is.

One great site with lots of info about dog body language is:

Good luck!

Let me answer it this way, if you've known your best friend since childhood, is there still a chance you two might get in an argument? Put simply, anything (from humans to animals) may be aggravated by many different factors, a dog biting it's owner is not uncommon.

Yes. The important question to ask yourself is if you provoked the bite. My first dachshund bit my husband because my husband startled him awake out of a dead sleep. He got bit on the nose and it really bled. The health department wanted to know if the dog was provoked, because if it was, then the dog is not a problem. If it was unprovoked, you need to address it ASAP or it will continue to happen.

Yes, yes, yes. You shouldn't ever allow your dog to bite you, even if it is playing with you. You should never allow him to tug your clothing, bite your arm through a wrapped up towel, bite you hands with gloves on etc. He needs to know that you are the "Alpha" dog, not him. If he does bite you, don't hit him with a newspaper or anything like that. If you must, slap him with your hand, never use an object.

Yes, aggression is a behavioral problem, that many dogs can develop. Especially if the owners are very leanient. To avoid this take your dog to obidience training. Apart from teaching your pup cool tricks, you will creat a strong bond, where you are the boss :)
