I'm getting my wisdom teeth out too (next friday), and yes it will be sore. You should have receieved a dentists notice on what to expect. Also don't eat 8 hours before the operation and you have to go on liquid foods for a week. (unless both of your wisdom teeth are on one side, then you just have to eat on the one side.)

Yes, your mom has to come with you to the dentist office because you won't be able to drive home. As for holding your hand and being in the same room, I dobut it because of insurance and health reasons. They will call her when the surgery is over however, and don't worry, just take plenty of medicine for the soreness! It doesn't hurt during the visit, but afterwards yes. You'll probably have disolvable stiches as well which will fade on their own as opposed to having removable stitches (those are NOT fun). Also, Anesthetic will create a very funny feeling and it will knock you out as quick as they say and then in what feels like a few seconds you'll be woken up and it'll be over.
I've been through this similarly when I had an embedded tooth that they had to chain and yank down, so its a little funny feeling and you'll probably feel a little dizzy and woozy.

Good luck and think of all the ice cream you can have afterwards!

If your dentist is doing the extractions with a local anesthetic your mom “CAN” stay with you and hold your hand if it makes you more comfortable. Most dentists will allow this for your comfort. If you are anxious, ask your mom to ask your dentist for a pre-medication that you can take that morning and will help to relax you prior to the procedure. You can also ask for N20 to be administered, which will also help you to relax.

Having this done under local is the way that most patients have their wisdom teeth removed. The cost factor is the main reason for doing this. If it were that painful do you think people would still be having it done at their dentist office?

As for pain “during the procedure,” no you won't experience any. The assistant will apply topical anesthetic that will have the injection sites numb, then your dentist will administer the anesthetic that will numb either your whole mouth for the lower, or just those teeth and the surrounding area if it's your upper. You will feel a pushing pressure first and hear some popping and crackling noise when the teeth are being luxated or wiggled loose from the bone. Don't mistake this noise for "pain" as some patients do. Expect it to happen and it's less likely to scare you. At any time, if you experience a "sharp" pain, like a needle stabbing you, just "raise your left hand" and the dentist will "stop" and administer more anesthetic to the area. This is the universal sign that all dentist adhere to. So you are in control and can ask them to stop for a moment, if needed to just catch your breath or ask a question.

Although the procedure it’s self isn’t painful, after the anesthetic wears off you will experience some discomfort that can range from mild to strong. It will really depend on the difficulty of the extractions. I’m sorry, but you will probably be pretty sore for a day or two. There isn’t anything that we can do that will eliminate this, other than medications, which you will be given a prescription for. Get this filled and take a pain medication immediately or “before” the anesthetic wears off, this will help you to control the pain. It’s easier to keep pain to a minimum with the medication, rather than try to get it to stop once it’s started. Your dentist will probably tell you to take Advil or Motrin 800mg every six hours for inflammation and to help reduce the swelling. Also ice the first 24 hours then moist heat for the inflammation. Just follow all instructions given and you will have a speedy recovery minus two wisdom teeth.

Try to relax, it's not that difficult and I can say that afterwards most patients are amazed at how simple and painless the procedure really was to them. So don’t worry, the assistant will go over the complete procedure explaining every step so that you can be familiar and expect certain things to happen. Knowing what to expect helps to decrease your fear. I hope that I’ve been of some help. Good luck with your pending procedure!

Additional information: The only time I've not allowed a parent in the operatory is when the "child" acted up "because" the parent was there. Sometimes it's just better if we have the patients full attention.

Hi my name is Jeffery M Salerno DDS

The injections are not painful, i tell my patients they feel like a bee sting for only a few seconds.

Your mom would be better off in the waiting room during the procedure, for space reasons only. If you are having them removed by an Oral Surgeon he/she and there staff will be the room to hold your hands. Don't worry you will be fine.

If you are that worried about he procedure you can always be sedated or put to sleep. Ask you Dentist about those options as well.

No. You're going to be alone in the room with the surgeon and his assistant. Nobody else is allowed as they would just get in the way.

I had my wisom teeth yanked when I was younger and I asked that they simply knock me out for the proceedure. It was so much easier to deal with although I did wake up groggy and not understanding English for a few minutes.

My reason for having been knocked out was I was tired of being awake when I had teeth pulled. Due to teeth that were too large for my mouth I had a lot of them pulled when I was younger, not to mention 4 permanent teeth as well as my wisdom teeth.

I would really look at the difference in cost and see if you want to go the route of going under when they do this. Trust me, it will go a lot easier if you do.
